Subject: NYU professor on assignment with UN warns that drone attacks could be war crimes
Zhang Fei    10/27/2009 11:17:33 PM
Another day, another nutjob... from New York:
A U.N. human rights investigator warned the United States Tuesday that its use of unmanned warplanes to carry out targeted executions may violate international law. Philip Alston said that unless the Obama administration explains the legal basis for targeting particular individuals and the measures it is taking to comply with international humanitarian law which prohibits arbitrary executions, "it will increasingly be perceived as carrying out indiscriminate killings in violation of international law."

The UN is also claiming to be investigating the homeless in NYC as a "humanitarian crisis", and then try to send in the NGOs.

Don't discourage them.  They might be useful for once, just keep an eye out for the child molesters.

Ispose    Fix the UN   10/29/2009 12:43:25 PM
It's easy to fix the UN..only need to do 2 things:
1 - Move it from NY to some 3rd World craphole for it HQ...you would see it's staff size shrink dramitically
2 - I'm not sure how many UN memebers there are so I may not be accurate on this number but...If there 150 UN member countries....each pays 1/150th of the budget....no more free ride at the expense of the US taxpayer

But how are blacks treated now?  And look at how Asians look at dark skin in general.

I don't know. I've never seen a black person until I came here. How were YOU treated in Asia?

I"m not black.  But I know lots of guys whose gfs or wives were disowned by the family and get stuff thrown at them, especially around college campuses.

The UN types will be the ones molesting.  The UN and its NGOs wedge themselves in like a parasite and make countries dependent on their services, then insert their political and financial objectives as a condition of receiving continual aid.

Strange. In typical Chinese family, it's the sons who got thrown at.

We are in agreement.

You would have to prove that it qualifies as an execution instead of what normally happens during war (you see an enemy, you shoot him).
Then you would have to prove that what was done is arbitrary or indiscriminate, which is unlikely since the missiles a drone fires are quite expensive and the drone is expensive to operate. (Cheap bullets from a machinegun being much more suited to indiscriminate and arbitrary killing in my opinion.)

As to how the US is percieved, I still haven't seen any sign of effective use of public relations. What is strange is that it seems to be argued that the perception is more important than whether or not be arbitrary executions are taking place.

What do you mean by public relation? Oh, wait, I get it, you mean "propaganda." So it is lack of effective counter-propaganda that is causing all the raucous.

If you cannot get the moral highground from a bunch of terrorists that put their head cutting videos on the internet, then yes I would say you have a public relations/propaganda problem.

The perception of the US seems to be in a state of flux, but having improved overall from the Bush years.  At least Obama is trying avenues that haven't been tried in decades.  Some initiatives may fail, some may succeed, like hoping "Bush fails", hoping "Obama fails" is bad for the country.  It is bad when a President fails in their efforts to do what is beneficial for the US.

The world seems to like what Obama is selling, but being the global community, which is generally idiotic as a whole (an individual is smart and will figure things out, people are stupid, panicky and suspicious, famous quote).   But if the world thinks the US is a bunch of suckers and slaps/bites/shoves back our extended, open hand, Obama in the second term, or the next President, will take a much different tack.

Because it will have been proven that the world doesn't want a friendly, cooperative US, it just doesn't want the US.  Look at how many countries are trying to sabotage our recovery and our currency, regardless of how it might hurt them even more.

So if the world doesn't respond to a kindler, gentler US under Obama, Obama can easily revert into a Teddy Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan or GW Bush.  So can the next President, since that is what the world seems to respond to.
