Subject: BP & CNPC only oil companies to win contracts in Iraq this summer
Le Zookeeper    10/23/2009 4:38:21 PM
By Tom Doggett
WASHINGTON, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens told Congress on Wednesday that U.S. energy companies are "entitled" to some of Iraq's crude because of the large number of American troops that lost their lives fighting in the country and the U.S. taxpayer money spent in Iraq.

Boone, speaking to the newly formed Congressional Natural Gas Caucus, complained that the Iraqi government has awarded contracts to foreign companies, particularly Chinese firms, to develop Iraq's vast reserves while American companies have mostly been shut out.

"They're opening them (oil fields) up to other companies all over the world ... We're entitled to it," Pickens said of Iraq's oil. "Heck, we even lost 5,000 of our people, 65,000 injured and a trillion, five hundred billion dollars."

President Barack Obama has pledged to withdraw U.S. troops in Iraq.

"We leave there with the Chinese getting the oil," Pickens said.

Iraq's Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani told a Washington conference on Wednesday that his government was happy with the energy auction it held earlier this year. The auction was the first chance for foreign oil firms to compete for Iraqi oil since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

"We're pleased with scale and participation of the IOC (International Oil Companies) and the transparent and public competition," Shahristani said at a U.S.-Iraq business and investment conference.

BP and the Chinese oil company CNPC were the only firms to win a contract in Iraq's bid round this summer, the first chance for foreign oil firms to compete for Iraqi oil since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Seven other oil and gas fields failed to attract bidders on the terms Iraq offered. Continued...

Well this is something the neocons that drummed for war either did not plan for or falsly thought we would be entitled to. We certainly look like a big bunch of clowns.  The most avoidable war in history and many still think it was a good idea.

Or maybe the reasons for going to war had everything to do with blood and nothing to do with oil?

I notice that the French did not get anything either ...

It was Cheney's idea to do this for oil and he completely botched access for US oil and oil service companies.  So all of those Americans died for nothing.  Not for nukes, not for a truly free Iraq, not even for oil.

Dumb, stupid conservatives.

Actually, I think France is getting a fair amount of infrastructure contracts. And they'll probably sell tech to Iran to ensure security in Iran influenced areas.

Don't forget all the hatred that we breed when we're powerful. Being powerful is what got us attacked if the first place.

I find it ironic that in all the "Americans died for nothing" posts, no one mentions that it's an elected Iraqi government making these awards to the companies they believe will do best.  Not a certain asshole from Tikrit.  What was his name again?  Sadman, Sarram...I can't remember now...ah, well.  Doesn't matter.  All that matters is that those damn Jew--uh, I mean, neocons led us into an unnecessary and unjust war, amirite?  Bush is Hitler and Obama is God.  Or something like that.

I forgive Nan his rant on Cheney.  The man must've swiped Nan's woman at the prom or something, because that sort of completely irrational and batshit hatred has to come from the heart.
