Again, where, praytell, did YOUR GPA ever come into this?

I have no one in my crosshairs, but this thread has suddenly been taken over by a narcissistic idiot with three screen names.

i apologize!! no narcissism here just trying to be helpful- the candidate can send me his/her resume for a job, my bad sbrentco. I sincerely regret the tone here. But I shall find a job for the person in question if they inquire.

Given the tone of the articles, she has limited herself to a certain job market, doesn't want to take an entry level position, etc. The CNN story actually does a better job explaining the situation than the original article posted.

She's upset that the school had more success placing candidates with a 4.0 GPA. Now there's a shock.

As Thompson sees it, any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record. But Monroe's career-services department has put forth insufficient effort to help her secure employment, she claims.

"They're supposed to say, 'I got this student, her attendance is good, her GPA is all right -- can you interview this person?' They're not doing that," she said.

Just based on the article I can understand why she's having difficulty finding a job.

Perhaps her would-be employers do not hire her because they see she believes she is entitled to a position rather than be content to work her way up and earn a good spot.

A very frivolous and retarded law suit.  FJV, while you have a point about colleges advertising about the many great opportunities that you will get by going to their school they never actually guarantee it.  Also, if you bust your ass and get good grades (a 2.7 is not what I would call wonderful *cough*), dont act like a self-entitled douche, and actually work to earn a spot somewhere...it is worth it.

Now, dont get me started about the price inflation.  Private schools are absolutely ridiculous right now.  Its not entirely their fault however.  Typically a university tries to limit its potential applicants by 1) difficulty of getting accepted and 2) price point.  Harvard is very hard to get into, and is very expensive.  I know at my university whenever there was an overabundance of applicants trying to get in the requirements would get bumped up along with my tuition.  While it made me want to strangle the little shits coming into the school and the administration, there was logic behind it.  What caused this inflationary spiral out of the realm of "ok, thats expensive, but worth it" and into "wtf would you like an arm, leg, one testicle and my first born too?" territory is that a private loan industry popped up. It became pretty damn easy to get the money that typically would put a school out of the realm of possibility for those kids who wanted to go, had the requirements, but did not excel enough to get the scholarships.  In response to the wasy money, the tuition kept getting increased...and increased...and increased.

The money should not have been given out that easily, and universities should have found some OTHER way besides overcharging tuition to limit applicants.  But I digress....This woman's lawsuit is simply ridiculous and should be thrown out like the little want-to-be entitled brat that she is.  If you want a job, earn it, you cant expect to bypass the entry level spot because you have a piece of paper saying your smart.

Actually I can cite some interesting history about tuition and private universities.

Carnegie Mellon University, once upon a time, used to be a fairly low cost university (mid 80s), with a demanding curriculum and  good engineering schools, computer science, business, and arts. Their reputation was mostly just regional, and they didn't really recruit top tier people.  A faculty member from their business school took over as president. He looked into the situation, and found that there was a strong correlation between what a university charged, and the quality of applicant. Thus he jacked up the tuition to be comparable to the top tier institutions (Ivy League, MIT out of state, etc). What happened? That quality of applicant increased dramatically as did the reputation of the school. However the physical plant of the university had not changed. The faculty had not changed. The courses didn't really change. However the university all of a sudden became more prestigious.

Now the tuition was higher and along with it came certain expectations. You had to have nicer dorms, a nicer student unions, and nicer places to eat. Also the faculty, being at a more prestigious institution wanted more money, so salaries had to go up. Thus pressure was applied to increase tuition further. Nowadays CMU is in the top 5 private universities for tuition and they still fill the place up.

Also, in recent years, possibly due to the incredible tuition, there has come the wonders of grade inflation. The average GPA at CMU is now around 3.2. Yes, the average is a B+, so above average. Much like in Lake Woebegon, the average student is now above average.

Though actually grade inflation is endemic across universities these days. Tuitions are up all over the place, and with it parental expectations. If you are spending the cost of a townhouse to send the kid to school, you expect something for your money. Of course parents don't place the expecation on the right place and buy into little Johnny's BS if he gets bad grade (nto my fault, the professor sucks). CMU was actually fairly slow to cave in on grade inflation.

No narcissism?  You've now told us that you have a perfect grade point average for certain subjects from a renowned university, you can speak 6+ languages "as of tonite" (sic) and despite losing jobs pretty soon after starting, command a very high salary.  I doubt anyone actually believes you but I expect next you'll be telling us that you're an master in kali and a triple michelin star chef.
And could you please make a choice and stick to it.  Either Herc the Merc, Necromancer or Le Zookeeper - people would have concluded that you suffer from multiple personality disorder if all three of your aliases weren't equally ridiculous.

Le Zookeeper    Hi Hugo   8/6/2009 6:52:31 AM
I am sober tonight but the statement stands, 6+1 languages English, French, Spanish, Hindi, Marathi, Gujerati & Urdu (little bit). Computer languages- well u know Java etc etc. And yes I do tend to be like that famous baseball star, I get fired a lot but I get rehired , next job starts August 17, I have been fired 4 times in 18 months as sales manager in Silicon Valley- hey guess what all my ex bosses still buy me drinks. They give me good references. You got to give me somepoints I got a job on Feb 4, 2009 in the middle of the biggest layoff in recent era, I got fired 3 weeks ago and I got another job starting mid August. (A little tip on why I get fired or let go, I specialize in starting new business deals, thats tough in this economy but people appreciate salespeople like me, shaken but not stirred, so I hate complainers, communists and people who do not tip. Se I am not narcissistic I admit I fail a lot, but I bounce back in 60days. ANd do not complain.
