Obama to Plumber: My Plan Will 'Spread the Wealth Around'

Barack Obama tells a plumber in Ohio he wants to "spread the wealth
around," eliciting criticism that his economic recovery plan is
socialist in nature.

FOXNews.com

Monday, October 13, 2008

Barack Obama told a tax-burdened plumber over the weekend that his
economic philosophy is to "spread the wealth around" -- a comment that
may only draw fire from riled-up John McCain supporters who have taken
to calling Obama a "socialist" at the Republican's rallies.

Obama made the remark, caught on camera, after fielding some tough
questions from the plumber Sunday in Ohio, where the Democratic
candidate canvassed neighborhoods and encouraged residents to vote early.

==> "Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?"
==> the plumber asked, complaining that he was being taxed
==> "more and more for fulfilling the American dream."

==> "It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want
==> to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they've
==> got a chance for success too," Obama responded. "My attitude
==> is that if the economy's good for folks from the bottom up,
==> it's gonna be good for everybody ... I think when you
==> spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."

Darth - as much as I like you - you need to come up with some solid argument .  At very least - you are not denying that Obama engaged in these horrible acts - at very most your defense is everyone does - which is not a defense but deflection.

Softwar,

I hold you in the highest regard here. I enjoy just about every post you make. However, I believe you have come to some incorrect conclusions here. Let me explain. I am not advocating any candidate. Nor am I defending any of them. All I am saying is that this issue is an irrelevancy for the vast majority of voters. Nobody gives a crap about any of this. By nobody I mean the swing voters who haven't made up their mind. In fact, the majority of Americans don't care about this. This issue is a waste of time from the McCain campaign which is floundering and in deep trouble. Moreover, politicians, Obama or McCain, all have dubious associations by the nature of their jobs. The vast majority of people they come into contact with almost guarantees that some will be of questionable character. But decades old associations that have nothing to do with current events on voters minds don't matter and more often than not the side that starts bringing things like this up is LOSING and grasping at straws to find an issue that will stick.

John McCains campaign stinks and was horribly run. Just to give an example. John McCain criticized Obama on lack of experience and then turns around and nominate Sarah Palin as VP? WTF!!! I mean when you are 72 years old with a history of health problems, who you nominate as VP matters. I know Sarah wows the conservative base. But the vast majority of America was like WTF???
realclearpolitics. com.
Check out those numbers. Think Palin helped or hurt?

Next McCain attacks Obama on spending and socialism but then goes on to propose a bailout for every individual who has ever dropped his lollipop? So now McCains floundering campaign sensing imminent doom is researching the history of anybody Obama has ever known or dealt with regardless of relevancy. Meanwhile the Obama campaign roars along talking about the two issues on American TVs everyday. The wars and economy!

You know, McCain is a lot like Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins. Great but never quite makes it to the top. McCain is going to have to do a lot better than he has in the little time left to have any chance. Either that, and I feel I've posted here long enough to be candid, or hope that America isn't ready to put a person who looks like Obama in the White House on election day. Short of that though this race is all but over.

If someone can prove Obama has young naked boys tied up in his basement then fine. THAT WOULD WORK. But short of some obviously egregious act this guilt by association nonsense is a waste of time. For that to work it has to be OBVIOUS to a dumb a$$ with no explaination required. You would need a picture like Obama embracing OJ Simpson and having beers to get the kind of shock needed to change votes. Even more so if it have nothing to do with issues.

McCain all but blew it with the nomination of Sarah Palin for VP. THAT was the decisive point. Had he been able to convince a younger healthy reputable respected statesmen or women to take the VP post and then focused on the issues with a clear direction on the war and economy he would be in a much better position. I think the GOP horribly miscalculated the significance of Obama's candidacy and what it means to Americans and globally. You can bet they understand now!

I agree with you about the need to vote against virtually every incumbant, period, to attain a real chance for significant improvement.  However, it would be unacceptable to do so by voting for communists.  The only opportunity to eliminate Republican incumbants is either in the primaries as opposed to the general election in November, and/or else to vote for a conservative third party candidate in the general election.

See here is the problem. the Democrats aren't communist. Comparing them that way is absurd and only makes you seem like a far right wing republican. Outside of that small circle no one will take you seriously. Voting for some third party conservative candidate is only going to waste time. Besides, look at how socialist our government is right now! Its not going to get any worse under a democrat. Sure they may put some policies together you may disagree with. But after it goes through congress things will balance out in the end. Extreme politics rarely ever carry the day "my friends...lol."

You're not wrong in the primary points you're making, but.... See, here is the problem... most people (including probably mostly all the Democrat politicians themselves) are too ignorant or too much in denial to recognize that the Democrats (granted, perhaps not every last one) actually are communists.  At least some Republican poiticians are, too.  Disputing that comparison is little more than arguing over the amount of communism they are required to advocate before agreeing to label them communist.  Absolutely we ought to look at how socialist our government is right now "thanks" to the Repubicrats, but you are delusional if you think Democrat majorities will **ever** result in **anything** other than increased socialism in our government--they **always** have, and the **only** thing that sometimes holds them back from doing worse to our country is the occasionally successful, lingering influence of the few real conservatives in government.  On the other hand, at least occasionally it is possible for conservatives to take enough hold of Republicans to at least have a chance at trying to reduce socialism a little, e.g., the Newt Gingrich House and the Contract With America.  However, there is no "balance" or some sort of swinging back and forth with no permanent movement one way or the other--the history of American politics is a constant slide toward increased socialism with occasional temporary reversals that are soon overcome and exceeded ("two steps forward, one step back").  You yourself acknowledge that we didn't start as socialist as we are now, and I contend there's no time when it's been worse overall.

I know you're trying to talk about practical realities independent of partisanship, and I'm interjecting a mix of conservative idealism and frustration.  Sorry to intrude.  Carry on.

I would say the the most abhorrent part is actually knowing that if the shoe were on the other foot, if it were a republican running for President whose career had be guided by PRIMARILY by another type or murderer AND another type of racist, Then it would be front page news on the opposite side of the world....but in actuality, GD America and standing on the flag on Sept.11 is about as abhorrent as anything else in my book.

Basically if you run a business that makes more than $250,000 a year - which is about 98% of all small businesses - then you will see a massive tax hike with Obama.  He wants to spread the wealth around.  That is what the plumber was complaining about.

Robin Hood in reverse - run by Friar Dodd, the Sheriff of Mass. Barney Frank - with helping hands to Little Franklin Raines and Scarlet Joe Johnson.

BINGO!!!!!!!

Thats it in a nut shell. BO wants to raise welfare in the form of a "tax reduction", pretty much the same as earned income credit works now , which is funded under WELFARE!!. Now we know for a fact that welfare does NOT work, it creates feelings of entitlement or ambition. One of the biggest crimes against the poor has been welfare in its truest form. You want to be rich and live comfortably WORK HARD FOR IT AND MAKE IT HAPPEN. I don't want to hear the bullshit about how its Bushes falt you have a shitty job or salary. its YOUR OWN FAULT! I work hard for my money and I want to keep it. If my company is doing good why should I give half its profits over to the government when i can use that money to expand and refine or higher more people. I over pay my workers by 10-15%, so i distribut my wealth to the people i'm responsible for.

Now as a small business owner myself i can tell you software is correct when he says most small businesses that actually have employees make over $250k a year and they (I included) will receive a serious tax hike. Like all businesses big or small though however, we won't pay the higher taxes, you the customer will. Meaning I will have to charge my clients more, who will in turn have to charge their end customers more. Further hampering American businesses and our ability to compete abroad.

Let's not minimize the effect allies and business partners have on the election.  If Obama was linked to a racist Nazi who hates jews - then that would be a problem.  Just because the Rev. Wright is a racist who hates jews - doesn't make much difference in my eyes.  The fact that Obama can smooze his way out of 20 years sitting with Wright and passing funds to support him demonstrates the social orientation of Obama's character.
The relationship with Ayers is similar.  If Obama was linked to Osama bin Laden then that would be a problem.  Just because Obama is a business associate and allied to Ayers - a terrorist who planted bombs in the USA - doesn't make much difference.  The fact that Obama can smooze his way out of that by saying he was just another guy in the neighborhood does not pass the proof test when years of close work and funds passed through their hands.  This speaks to the political orientation.

The relationship with Rezko was much more business like.  If Obama had business dealings with Enron then that would be a problem.  Just because Obama helped Rezko get taxpayer funded loans and defraud us - teamed with Rezko on a sweet real estate deal, and took money from Rezko while the slumlord made his tenents freeze in a Chicago winter does not make much difference.  It's still greed pure and simple.  Just because Obama can get a pass from the national press (not the Chicago press) does not eliminate the greed.  This speaks directly to the question of corruption.

All these are issues.  The McCain campaign can bring them up without raising racists comments - even the Wright stuff.

Now - has McCain run a crummy campaign - sure.  Its always nice to be outside looking in.  The fact is none of that takes from the racist, jew hating, left wing, corrupt politician who is leading the Democrat party right now.

It seems a lot of frustration is being expressed on this thread so let me add my two cents. It is important that everyone pays some income tax i.e. is seen to be contributing from their income to the society except for those who are truly unable. I know, we can argue all day over the meaning of truly and politicians will manipulate the word to their advantage. Additionally if you have a graduated income tax to have no more than three or four brackets is patently absurd. For a person making $250, 000 per year to pay at the same rate on its next dollar of income as someone who makes millions per year is clearly not equitable. I myself feel that those points are what's intrinsically unfair about Obama's tax plans.

Softwar    Pay No Tax But Get a Gov Check - Welfare by any other name   10/15/2008 9:48:33 AM

The Tax Foundation estimates that under the Obama plan 63 million Americans, or 44% of all tax filers, would have no income tax liability and most of those would get a check from the IRS each year. The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis estimates that by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS.

The total annual expenditures on refundable "tax credits" would rise over the next 10 years by $647 billion to $1.054 trillion, according to the Tax Policy Center. This means that the tax-credit welfare state would soon cost four times actual cash welfare. By redefining such income payments as "tax credits," the Obama campaign also redefines them away as a tax share of GDP. Presto, the federal tax burden looks much smaller than it really is.

I find the tax plan as universally unfair and offensive in that a government that wastes our money like never before comes up with some BS, zero-sum scheme in which tax cuts are necessary for economic growth...but every penny of those cuts will be paid for....uh....in taxes.
It seems like if they were concerned with waste, they'd just take a long walk off a short pier.

'Cause the politicians do NOT use dynamic methods of calculating tax revenues, but use static models that do not take into account the behavior of those who will be affected by changes in tax policies. Like, geez,  they're going to tax me on Jan 1 on my future capital gains - I'll take my gains NOW and move my assets elsewhere.
Result?  Anticipated govt revenue - as usual - is FAR below estimates.

Wright isn't an issue. I listened to him and nothing he said in that sermon was wrong. I'm referring to this...

h*tp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvMbeVQj6Lw&feature=related

...Now political realities being what they are, it's wise for Obama to stay away from this since he would not want it to be spun into something it isn't. But nothing is wrong or even incorrect with that sermon. Dont forget Rev Wright is a former Marine and USN Corpsman who has cared for a US President...

ht*p://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e9/Jeremiah_Wright_as_a_Marine_Medic_Tending_to_Pres_Lyndon_Johnson.jpg/200px-Jeremiah_Wright_as_a_Marine_Medic_Tending_to_Pres_Lyndon_Johnson.jpg

...that's a no win issue for McCain and best left alone.

Ayers did what he did when Obama was 8 years old and suggesting some nefarious association is silly as pools have shown. Only far right Republicans even care about it. As far as "Jew Hating" or "Corrupt" goes, thats nice but proof? I don't mean opinion but proof. Even so Americans don't care about irrelevant crap like that when their portfolios and retirement accounts are worth considerably less that a month ago. McCain needs to have a candid down to earth talk with Americans tonight about what he intends to do to secure their investments and jobs. Anything short of that, any TIME WASTED trying to demonize Obama for some past association with a has been terrorist is certain doom for McCains chances of winning.

Im not an apologist for Obama. I don't hate McCain nor am I publically endorsing Obama. I'm just objectively explaining WHY things are as they are and sharing observations about what's wrong with McCains approach. I was asked what McCain should do earlier and I didn't respond. The reason is I'm not sure at this point is McCain can do anything. His best chance ended with Palin's nomination and the passage of the bailout package. At this point, Obama will only lose if he makes some crazy mistake and based on how he has carried himself that doesn't seem likely. Perhaps if McCain could have got Powell, Dr. Rice or Gen Honore on his ticket that would have helped more than Palin but it's much too late for that. Not to mention none of those individuals would run against Obama.
