Subject: Hypothetical - Foreigner for POTUS
DropBear    2/4/2005 10:09:48 AM
If your constitution allowed (let's pretend) for a foreigner to be elected as American President, which world leader would you like to see in the top job as Commander in Chief?? Obviously Jaques Chirac is a non-starter ;) .

"I'd say the current PM of Australia" Not a bad choice for you blokes there. He is conservative, pro-USA, pro-defence and is very good at managing the national budget. Hmmm...might even bring some culture to you lot as well. Gets rid of overpaid baseball players and nancy gridiron game and replaces them with cricket and rugby. Also, Americans would be required to drink far more beer than you do now....

I'd go with either Tony Blair or John Howard. I wouldn't be crazy about Blair's domestic policies, but both men are strong leaders that understand what's at stake in the GWOT. I like Arnold as well, but I'm waiting to see how well he handles California.

Haven't heard much out of the media about Arnold, so he must be doing good.

Dunno yet. He made some interesting points in his state of the state speech, some key points being a plan to kill gerrymandering and use "retired judges" to apportion districts, along with some education reform stuff, like the typical "tying teacher pay to student performance". I believe mike_golf is a fellow Californian and can shed more light on this stuff (as he might actually pay some attention to the State of the State speech and is/was in Northern California where I am in the South.)

No, I think we can rule out any constitutional scallywags by stopping the citezenry of said foreign countries from voting as well. However, If Oz PM was to be POTUS, then you would get a majority vote by Aussies towards conservatism. As both the Lower House and Senate are now conservative, 10 million odd Oz votes would keep the Republicans in for a long time. Food for thought....

Least it would be a challenge ;) Our Lefty's are so disorganised and have no real policies that our conservatives are like a runaway train. All good mate :) .

Arnold isn't doing bad. He's using what the people want to club the completely unaccountable California Legislature into submission. My biggest gripe is that he has made too many promises to special interests (nurses union, education lobby, Indian Tribes) and has put himself in the same position many other governors have of owing political favors that prevent reform. The people of this state want an accountable government that acts on behalf of everyone. Since our state constitution allows the people to pass legislation by direct vote, if I were governor I wouldn't even bother with the legislature to get the reforms passed that are needed.

Wasn't his mandate to get the economy back on track? Do you think he is getting to far ahead of himself (perhaps out of his depth)with all these other issues?? Mike_golf, What are your Californian views on the Oz BHP-Billiton concept of a LNG tanker/platform moored permanently off the Cali coastline?? Seems a number of green/social groups are dead against it. I hear you blokes are gagging for alternatives, as I believe their is an energy crisis (electricity production/demand) up your way, is this right???
