Subject: Hypothetical - Foreigner for POTUS
DropBear    2/4/2005 10:09:48 AM
If your constitution allowed (let's pretend) for a foreigner to be elected as American President, which world leader would you like to see in the top job as Commander in Chief??

Obviously Jaques Chirac is a non-starter ;) .

The governator - Arnold Schwartzeneger. He may even be able to carry California. For a Republican, that would be quite a feat!

I would say Chirac. Why do you put him as a non-starter? Of all the foreign leades from Putin to Blair to Sharon, he seems very intelligent.

"he seems very intelligent" It's all relative. I choose Fabrizio Quattrocchi.

I choose Kim Jong Il. That way when the loony left starts ranting about fascist, oppressive dictators they will finally be right.

Herc, Chirac is a Gaullist idiot.

Herc might be on to something. Chirac's a selfish jerk who cares only for La Belle France at the expense of all others. Transfer his loyalty to the US, and he might make a workable candidate for the DNC. I'd say the current PM of Australia, Tony Blair, or Mikhail Gorbachev.

I'd say if a foreigner wants to be President of the United States, he must first make his home country a part of the United States, as per our Constitution's pre-requisites for admission to the Union. Then his own people can vote to send him to Washington D.C., which is what many US states have done with their governors, for better or worse.

If a foreigner without citizenship serves in the Army for his country, upon his end of service should he be allowed to run for POTUS? There are enough undocumented persons who have served in the Army and died to receive posthumous citizenship. On principle, should they be allowed to run for POTUS? Note that this is different from foreigners running for POTUS off the bat. Alternatively, people are thinking of allowing presidential runs for people who have been naturalized citizens for N amount of years (the number is usually 20 or so years).

"I'd say the current PM of Australia" Not a bad choice for you blokes there. He is conservative, pro-USA, pro-defence and is very good at managing the national budget. Hmmm...might even bring some culture to you lot as well. Gets rid of overpaid baseball players and nancy gridiron game and replaces them with cricket and rugby. Also, Americans would be required to drink far more beer than you do now....

I'd go with either Tony Blair or John Howard. I wouldn't be crazy about Blair's domestic policies, but both men are strong leaders that understand what's at stake in the GWOT. I like Arnold as well, but I'm waiting to see how well he handles California.

Haven't heard much out of the media about Arnold, so he must be doing good.

Dunno yet. He made some interesting points in his state of the state speech, some key points being a plan to kill gerrymandering and use "retired judges" to apportion districts, along with some education reform stuff, like the typical "tying teacher pay to student performance". I believe mike_golf is a fellow Californian and can shed more light on this stuff (as he might actually pay some attention to the State of the State speech and is/was in Northern California where I am in the South.)
