thanks for the information. mind you i wouldn't count on the canadian gov't actually parting with any cash. their track record is pretty pitiful that way.

It ws my understanding that Canada was upgrading 80 of its current f-18s to this higher standard already, If more were needed wouldn't they just upgrade the other 40 or so still in their inventory?

I was just looking at the DND web site re:CF-18 modernization. It appears that Canada is just tagging it's aircraft on the end of the Australian program that was already well underway. The development and research costs were already paid by Australia reducing the cost for Canada, as well the same prime contracter used by Australia was chosen by Canada to further reduce the cost. The program will see the installation of new radar,"have-Quick" jam-resistant radios, combined interrogator/transponders,stores management systems, mission computers, embedded global positioning systems/inertial navigation systems, new infra-red sensor,multi-purpose display group, night visioning system and advanced air to air and air to ground weapons. So now it looks like we are freeloading at the expense of Australia's legwork.

The problem with Canada as a military power is that the people first off do not want it and the government has always cut the military spending. Not sense the second war has Canada spent enough money to maintain our fighting ability. And when they cut up the Arrow they destroyed our moral as a nation to want to build a military. We have always had good service men, but everytime we do anything the government cuts back even more. They cut the airborn, because of a few bad apples. They gave away the hydrofoil, they builded the prototype for a troop carrier for the artic and then just used it to run VIP's around Ottawa. Sorry for some of my spelling. I just get so mad when I think about some of the government decisions.

anyone thinks canada is going to be a super power better get their sanity checked.  we just don't have the population for superpower status and barring massive immigration inflows will never have it.  that said we can be a solid middle tier player and with our commonwealth buds a formidable voice in world affairs.

Quite honestly nobody is going to mess with Canada militarily...Having the US as your biggest trading partner, neighbor and friend means that you are under our umbrella. Unless Canada picks a fight with somebody you are safe. Quite honestly the US should extend an offer of statehood to the Canadian provinces...except Quebec. Not that I expect canadians to accept...why accept the responsibilty when you already have the benefits?. Sort of like Puerto Rico.

you sure you want to add that many more democrats to your electoral process ispose?  i'd figure 80-90% of canadians would wind up voting democrat and that would considerably change the scene in washington for many years to come.

Ehran, you don't know how sneaky and devious our plans truly are.  We support global warming because with the rising temperatures, the bitter cold will no longer cloud Canadians' minds.  Then, we can absorb you, knowing you will vote Republican.

We know you guys really love us, despite all the mean things you say.  Why else, given such a huge country, would almost all of you choose to live huddled up as close as you can get to the US border?  If you cross into Canada from the US, and drive just another hour or two north, poof, there goes civilization, nothing but trees and moose until you hit the tundra.

I know all about Canada.  I watched the Red Green show.
