Subject: Canadian Viewpoint?

Speaking strictly for myself as a U.S. citizen. I don't hate Canada or Canadians! I have respect for them as a nation, and have to say they have the most beautiful scenery in their country the further you go west! And gathering from some canadian posts on this board about their military; it has a higher potential for more disciplined and a more respected military force! And besides military funding issues and having a small number of men in uniform, i do respect their military potential! And now my question is, what are your opinions on your government(i.e. economics and existing agencies)? How do you all on this board, feel about the world at large? How do some of you feel as a nation, you fit in this world? Please grant me the luxury of ignorance for i have not read every post all they way through and (have only been on this entire discussion board for a few months), so please be gentle on me! I feel with these questions, are my best opportunity for me as an american living in my home state of Texas to understand better my canadian neighbor! panther

Hello Panther I?m from Alberta. In some ways Alberta is to Canada what Texas is to the U.S. My personal views are not typical of most Canadians. I?d like to see Western Canada, Alaska, the Dakotas and Montana form a new and free Republic. Have a military system like Switzerland and cut immigration to zero. And most of all, tell the socialist world (UN) to get lost!

Hi again Panther I?m of the opinion that western civilization is in a chronic decline. The western world peeked socially about 200 years ago with the creation of the USA. Sure there have been advances since then, like the abolition of slavery and the liberation of women, but over all we are in the red. The irony is that the US today is more socialist than Russia was in the 1920s.

I can see your point there regarding the U.S.! Part of me feels that even while the Soviet Govt. is gone, their legacy in the western media lingers on. What scares me more is that the democratic party has not resembled a true american party since the end of the vietnam war! What little values it has left is being sold to foreign governments for the highest bid! I bet Gore is done cursing about that darn pesky campaign finance reforms!

I am proud of our military. It is neither the fault of the memebrs of the Canadian Forces, nor that of the people of Canada that our Liberal government has destroyed our military over the past decade. Looking back throughout history, the Liberals have always reduced military spending and then the Conservatives have tried to boost it again when they come to power. Our problem lately is that half the Conservatives changed over to the newly created Canadian Alliance Party and therefore neither have been able to defeat the Liberals in any federal election. We need to get rid of the Liberals before its too late for the Canadian Forces.

The Liberals have been destroying the Military for the past 40 years mate. Mulroney tried to right their wrongs but the liberal media made him out to be a crook.

That sounds vaugely familiar. Almost like the 90's during clinton's watch! It seems that Bush will continue feeling the heat from our media, for making use of our military to protcet us from the dopes who brought us 9-11!

I seem to recall when i was a teen in the early 80's that during some routine excercises between the U.S. & Canada, our forces lagged behind those of our canadian allies in training and manueveouring! Although it does take some time to rebuild an volunteer army from scratch, by the early 90's it was a force second to none! During the liberal 90's the military was allowed to waste away in favor of social and domestic projects! Next year is election year, and if bush is to carry the election, & with democrats fuming in their seats, we might see a continuing favourable increase of military spending over the deficit and social issues! If the democrats win then the priorities will be reversed! It's either, or. And given the situation of the times, my bets are on bush!

I don't disagree that Canadian troops are very very good at what they do but they have no support in the government whatsoever. Canadian snipers broke the world record for longest distance to kill a man with a Rifle. Back in the 80's when NATO uesd to hold competitions between NATO countries the Canadian Army were frequent winners. Our fighter pilots are top notch. It makes me sick though to see the liberals let our military become so insignificant. We are not even honouring our commitments to NATO. it's funny to because they won't let Countries from the Former East Block into the Alliance because they don't spend enough of their GDP on defense which the minimum to be part of the Alliance is 2% yet the Canadian government spends 0.008% of our countries GDP on the Armed Forces.
