Subject: 4 Cdn. Soldiers Killed in I.E.D. Attack in Afghanistan
Griffin    4/23/2006 12:45:26 AM
Taliban militants killed 4 Canadian soldiers early Saturday when then attacked a Canadian Army G-wagon with an I.E.D. The soldiers were part of a 4-vehicle convoy and struck just outside the village of Gumbad, 75 Km north of Kandahar City. The Taliban were targetting some senior officers who had made a visit to meet with village elders and struck as they were on the way back to their base. Knowing they would lose everytime in a toe to toe battle, the Taliban are resorting to a strategy of intimidation of the local villagers, and attacking the Canadians and other NATO forces using I.E.D.'s. To help comprehend what the poor Afghan people and the allies are up against with the Taliban and their ilk see this very graphic article. link

"...I guess its time we entered Waziristan." Perhaps. Still, I'd like an invite from the Pakistani government-under the table. Doing so openly may be suicidal for Musharef. However, I wonder were we willing to take the local and international heat. Perhaps it may be best to see 1.) the effect of the "summer offensive", and 2.) the interest that Pakistan actually has in being a sovereign nation-state. Kipling's thoughts on the Khyber notwithstanding, failure in Waziristan probably means acquiescence in Baluchistan for the Pakis as well.

It would be nice if the Pakistani and allied forces in Afghanistan could have joint training exercises in the use of artillery and aircraft to measure their efficiencies in 'safe' areas away from built up region and in the obviously deserted areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Yes we could mutually cooperate in observation, seeing how artillery units responded to FOO instructions from UAV and UCAV and have joint mass fire missions from the ground and air. We could also have Pakistan and Afghanistan governments issue degrees that certain areas outside of populated centres would be free fire zones the length of the country, but that safe border crossing areas manned by each countries military and their allies would help ensure their safety. Of course at night all the border, with the exception of the designated areas, (which would be manned by troops of a company or larger unit size), would be a night time training free fire zone for at least 10 km on either side of the border. This training would go on for about a month and during this period both nations and their allies would have their own air interdiction and ground liaison training in population movement control. What a wonderful sign of international co-operation in the support of the Afghanistan democracy. :-)
