Subject: SBS/SAS still the best?
Johnny Frost    5/7/2003 2:44:23 PM
I didnt hear much about the british special forces in Iraq (Not that suprising as silence is UK govt policy I know) but what I did hear sounded a bit worrying. see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2983905.stm . Are they still the world leaders, or are the US catching up. On another matter in Afganistan this time. It was muted in UK papers that an SAS solider was awarded the VC for a cave action in Afganistan, involing an entire squardron of the SAS. Does anyone know any more about this story? is it true?

Csar    Want to try out for Delta   9/18/2003 7:09:25 AM
I'm currently in the USMC, (Air Traffic Control Officer -1LT) and I'm pretty much through with it. I'm trying to go infantry in the Marine Corps to spring board into the Force Recon Community but I already got a NO, IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN answer. I also tried to put in an Interservice Transfer to Seals but they (Seals) said they are no longer taking interservices due to the big amount of sailor's applications they have. So, with this situation, my last choice is to try to go Delta, but I just don't know where to go to. Can anybody out there give me some guidance. Csar

Yes, far as I understand it was the SAS that took on the Tora Bora cave complex. Apparently it got down to fighting with knives as it was very close quarter combat. The SAS has been effected by to much attention from the press, and now is trying to keep low key as much as possible. Members of the SAS have to sign to say that they will not write books now, as there was a loop hole. In Serria Leone the press was told the 1 para was in action, although it was actually the SAS that did the bulk of the work.

Seems like you already have the main operational skill with your current job, so if you can sustain the physicality of Special Tactics, I'd think the USAF would be happy to give you a shot. I'm not sure how it works on the commisioned side, but I know they are always, always, looking for enlisted CCTs and PJs.

I think this book could put a little light on the subject. Although I haven't read it yet myself, I think it has some of the answers.

Tora Bora was SBS, the SAS were a few hundred k's away undertaking Op Trent. (Unfortunately the myth of Tora Bora, awarding a silent VC, knife fighting etc etc... was the good old brit dailies going into overdrive again) Nice romantic story - but not a scintilla of truth runs through it though. (check the brit military forces forums-specforces sub-forum for their view - it's not very flattering) If you're still on here RM-Nod you can back me up on this one :)

Still here Gf, sorry for the late reply. Not sure I caught that post but if chunks or Sneaky Beaky were talking about it then I'm sure you can take there word for it. I doubt anything we here about any SF in iraq is 100% true.

ex2para    RE:UK Special Forces versus US Special Forces (semantics)   4/3/2004 11:53:40 AM
I know this is an old thread but in general the term special forces was not used within the services to distinguish between unit or personel. ie S.A.S/S.B.S are what they are and usually refered to by some minor derogetry term like bandits ,them etc.(third tense) unit nicknames were common and not usually polite. regements such as Para, Marine comando's were not usually considerd special other than mode of transport to the theater. They were usually part of a Spearhead battalion as were other regiments or battalions within and rotated from variuos levels of reddiness
