Ytstridsfarty NY is a frigate version of the Visby Corvette. I couldnt find any links in english to it. And not many informatory in Swedish either, only statements from the swedish government about it currently being at a lower priority for the Swedish Navy, but its still being developed.

I can see why the USN is attached to multiple guns in larger combatants then. But if the second gun is there for insurance, not for twice the rounds-on-target-rate as one gun can provide, surely whats needed is more reliable gun mechanism, rather than multiple guns. Plus think of the gucci kit that could be fitted into the vacated space! Ian

Even the most reliable of things can break down, become battle damaged etc.

I have always thought two guns to be better than one where jamming is concerned, however I think the old twin 4.5 inch of the Coventry class was a better solution to having two turrets.

Did I miss the meeting where the Type 23 (Duke class) were decided to be sub-standard? They have been upgraded somewhat since they first came into service.

The Type 23 were originally supposed to be essentially unarmed barges hauling a towed array sonar. That they came out as true GP frigates with considerably greater capability in the 3 major combat roles (ASW, ASuW and AAW) than the Leander's they replaced on not much greater displacement and from such humble beginnings is quite the accomplishment.

The Belgians are buying two of ours (still one more available - while stocks last). They will be their flagships. Their current frigates (two) are practically covettes in comparision.

Belgium may not be buying out Type 23's yet, what is your source? According to a recent Jane's article, Chile, Belgium and Pakistan are argueing over them.

Just rumour you understand, but Chile has dragged this out too long. Belgium get two and the other goes to the highest bidder.
