why would you rate a Brandenburg as superior to an Arleigh Burke II in AWD - it doesn't even come close. As for ASW - I'd be putting my money on UK platforms. Just a small point - The Brandenburgs aren't designed keel up as a "7 Seas" bluewater asset - again that raises the issue of basic sea capability across different environments. History is pretty persistent in showing that some of the very good basic designs (such as the 60's Daring Class) might have been very good in specific environments and notional combat roles - but were not so flash in othe theatres of Op. In that sense you're maybe looking at them being a good Nth Atlantic platform, but I'd personally dispute them as being the best all rounder.

I would say, that the Swedish Navy's YS2000 Visby class corvette is what we should be looking at. As low signature as possible in all aspects - that was what it was designed for from the outset. And many weapon systems in a small vessel. High speed and waterjet propulsion for maneuverability and quietness. Issues with it though are that it has only an AA gun (ie, no point air defence missile system) and of course its only a corvette - or even strike/patrol craft at 600 tons. Up the scale though to 5000 tons but keep the low observability concept and that would be the best frigate!

Oliver Hazard Perrys are very good frigates at what they do. They don't have all the fancy bells and whistles of DDGs or CGs or the UK "frigates" but they offer incredibly cost-efficiency in their current mission...stopping suspect vessels. :)

Australia will if we go for a modified F-124 with AEGIS and a 5 inch gun. We would be cheating though. As we try not to - we would probably call them destroyers. Then, of course, they would not be the best, They would come second to an AB IIA. Regards, Massive.

Just curious, what is it about ABs that make you think they are not good at ASW?

This, like every other "which is best" question is hopelessly meaningless. The reason there is such a wide variety of designs out there with widly different characteristics is that each user has different ideas about what they should do. Thus there is no "best" unless you put it into the context of who is using it, when and how.

It's probably too broad a brush, I should qualify it more that they are better at AWD than ASW. It's all relative, but it's also based on discussions I've had with blackshoes at UDT/ASW events. In the scheme of things there aren't too many that can match them as an ASW platform, but in a real sense the ASW skillset of the USN has backseated since circa 1989 when the force on force threat matrix shifted. Everything points to the USN rejuvenating their ASW skills again to counter a growing PLAN threat in subs. ASW has an overall competency has been degraded. (P3's are more focussed on ISR, have less ASW training, organic ASW has diminished at a CSF level (S3's) and as such there's not a lot of synchronised/combined ASW training. The hunting is down to ships and organic rotors - not ideal in comparison to the halcyon days of subs, ASW skimmers, S3's, P3's etc all working together.

They have a nice new frigate coming on line, but does it count? The Saudi frigate? The Triton indicates that FSC will be a wonder to behold. UK frigates rule.

if you're talking triton as in a large trimaran, you do realise that the original concept was Russian? ;) DERA managed to score a bucketload of esoteric Russian vessel designs after the CCCP collapsed. They went on a design acquisition spree.
