Subject: type 23 vs a sub of your choice
tiff    12/20/2004 3:06:19 PM
North atlantic modern day. Type 23 in EM (electric motor) drive, ultra quiet, tail out, the works.
A submarine of your choice somewhere down there. What do you think? Who finds who first?

I think it is more likely that the sub will find the Type 23 first, however I also think that the Type 23 has the greater chance of surviving the incident, thanks to its Merlin. However I think I heard from somewhere that the Type 23's have had their variable depth sonar removed.

Sound-wave's spread is very complex.Difference in temperature will lead the difference in density.Refraction will happan.Ocean current and salinity also will effect the result.SO it's hard to conclude.

The last six were not built with VDS to save cost. I understand that the VDS of the others are kept in storage during peacetime to reduce wear. Steve

I understand that the VDS of the others are kept in storage during peacetime to reduce wear. Thats kinda a crappy idea. If you go to war and the subs out at sea, you're screwed.

The Type 23's do not have a VDS (Variable Depth Sonar), they have a passive Towed Array Sonar. Very different beasts indeed. It's a shame really because today the the passive tails are essentially obsolete while an old-fashioned VDS might actually have some value. The real problem though is that submarines are so far ahead of surface ship ASW now that there is really no contest.

To my knowledge the Sonar 2031 is still operational aboard the earlier Type 23?s and is set to be permanently replaced throughout the Duke fleet by the Sonar 2087 variable depth, towed active and passive system which will be fully integrated with the DNA (1), the SSCS Command and Control System and bow mounted active array, Sonar 2050. This should make the Dukes the best or at least one of the best ASW platforms in service?HMS Westminster has already been upgraded to the new system at Rosyth.

I thought the first principle of ASW was to try and detect your opponents signature whilst trying to reduce your own. If so who is the 'quietest' the bottom feeder or the skimmer? Why the assertion that submarine technology is so far ahead of the game? Type 23= CODLAG, masker air etc.

Please don't tell me I wasted my life crawling through bilges looking for 'noise shorts?'
