Subject: Lame ship names

What is the WORST name given to a warship And the BEST?
My choice is the WW2 Royal Navy - HMS Pink. Not very macho or enspiring is it? Do you think the crew forgoed the traditional Rum and Beef for Tea and scones?
I think HMAS Vampire - A Daring class Destroyer had the right choice. Could we see this name return for any of the proposed AAW Destroyers for Oz?

The naming convention for RAN vessels used to be: Carriers and Cruisers: Capital Cities Destroyers: Inherited from RN, except for "Anzac" and "Tobruk" and the 3 "Tribal" Class Frigates and Sloops: Rivers Corvettes/Minesweepers: Country cities and towns Minor War Vessels: Native animals Then, The DDGs and the FFGs were named after capital cities The "Anzac" Class FFHs were a mixture of previous destroyer, frigate and corvette names Submarines: Famous RAN officers and sailors Patrol Boats: Country cities and towns. Mine Warfare Vessels: Rivers I realise that some of these names seem a little "insipid" to a non-Aussie, but then the USN convention of naming DDs and DEs after officers and sailors produced some rather "strange" names also - e.g., USS "England". And as for naming a carrier after a French ship, well....

Any Ship name thats named after a politician for strictly political purposes that doesn't have some history behind it.

Some WW1 R.N. destroyers: "Pelican", "Pigeon", "Grasshopper", "Cynthia", "Dove", "Sylvia".... Not exactly likely to strike fear in the heart of an opponent!

I would point out that most ship names, being people or places, don't exactly stike fear inot anyone. Hell, the Royal Navy is careful now not to name ships anything that could - political correctness!.

The first US naval vessel named for a foreign ship was the US Frigate Guerriere, built in 1814. She was named for the British frigate captured by the USS Constitution. She was in commission until 1831 and was scrapped in 1841. A second USS Guerriere was a sloop launched in 1865 and was laid up and sold in 1872. The USS Cyane was launched in 1837, and named for the 32 gun frigate captured by the USS Constitution in 1814. She served until decommissioned in 1871. She was sold in 1887.

Naah, it had to be a ship like the HMS Raging Queen, a manly ship full of manly men. Captained, no doubt, by Sir Bunny Wigglesworth, AKA Zorro, the Gay Blade.

The river class submarine HMS Clyde (H12)had a great record during WWII. Torpedoed Gneisenau and sank several enemy merchants. "Clyde" is a pretty lame name for a warship.

A juxtaposition. Worst name? CVN USS John Stennis. A politician, need a say more? Okay, he did support a strong defense budget. Best? CVN USS George W Bush, flew his TBF bomber into combat off the deck of an aircraft carrier during WWII.

Surely all American ships named after Presidents are named after politicians? I do realise that some saw combat sevice, but sneering at ships named after politicians seems a little odd.

Naval Combat Ships should be named for only: Sailors and Marines who earned the Navy Cross or the MOH Sailors and Marines who died in the service of their country Absolutely nobody else

I don't put President's who have led the country in a war in the same class as other pols. I have a pet peeve with the naming of US ships. SSBN's Ohio, Florida, Georgia, the soverign state of Henry Jackson, Alabama, etc. CGs Ticonderoga,Yorktown, Valley Forge. Thomas Gates, Shiloh, Gettysburg. SSN's Sturgeon, Hammerhead, Sea Devil, Finback, Mendel Rivers, ok I'll give you politicians for fish.
