Subject: Lame ship names

What is the WORST name given to a warship And the BEST? My choice is the WW2 Royal Navy - HMS Pink. Not very macho or enspiring is it? Do you think the crew forgoed the traditional Rum and Beef for Tea and scones? I think HMAS Vampire - A Daring class Destroyer had the right choice. Could we see this name return for any of the proposed AAW Destroyers for Oz?

The British exchange officer is always the navigating officer.

Wasn't their a US "boomer" called Corpus Christi after a town in the US. Or was this idea sunk by the church?

USS City of Corpus Christi was a Los Angeles-class 688 attack submarine, not a boomer. To keep the Catholic Church happy the USN added City of to the beginning of it.

Stand by a second, spsun10000, what's wrong with 'Duncan'? Admiral Adam Duncan was the commander of the British fleet that destroyed the Batavian-Dutch fleet at Camperdown, 11/10/1797, using tactics that Nelson was later to emulate at Trafalgar, knocking Holland out of the wars against France. Adam Duncan is one of the all-time heroes of the Royal Navy! Oh, and as far as I'm aware, 'Decoy' is not one of the planned names for the T45s, where did you get that idea from? First 6 are 'Daring', 'Dauntless', 'Diamond', 'Duncan', 'Dragon', 'Defender', with the last two names undecided, as far as I'm aware..

Okay HS your mortification is noted - I just came across 'Decoy' when seeing a list of WW2 RN destroyers. I hope we won't be giving either of the last 2 Type 45's this name. I did think it counted though as it was used as a warship name at one point. Can't argue with you re Admiral Duncan but his achievements don't change the fact his name looks a bit naff on a warship! A bit like the USS Hopper (after Grace Hopper). I can see an enemy now with a UK/US task force closing on him: "Sir Duncan and Hopper are closing fast with Stump in support" Reply: "Right, can you all stop pissing yourselves now and get back to your stations! Steve
