Mostly American built or american style surface porces, incl Arleigh Burke lookalikes, decent domestically made submarines, lots of P-3's. Not a large force, but competent and generally unexciting. Basically tasked with ASW in the NW pacific during the cold war.

I recommend a trip to the local library where you will want to look up the publications "United States Naval Institute Combat Fleets" (whatever edition they might have) and or "Jane's Fighting Ships." This will tell, and show you everything you need to know. Yes I realize this means prying your hands from the keyboard and leaving the house but there are still some things books to better than electronic gizmo's.

Curt - Not a large force? I would consider 40+ destroyers/Frigates and 18 subs to be a pretty damn power force even if it is technically not a navy (Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force). It is certainly one of the 5 most powerful navy forces in the world. Its most recent sub design is certainly equal to any other current ss design. The only non-US surface type that is more powerful than the Kongo is the Kirov class.

Try this link: link It has a general description of their mission, capabilities, and operations. Over at link is a decent rundown, and there is a list of standing and projected vessels on the right side. They do indeed have a formidable force. And it will be interesting to see if their next generation helicopter-carrying destroyers do lead them up to a proposed 20,000ton light helicopter carrier... which would be ideally suited to STOVL JSF operations..
