Subject: The China Syndrome & the British Navy
human7    7/10/2004 10:00:29 AM
If China launches an invasion of Taiwan, the United States would most certainly react. (This whole notion of ambiguity is American PR.) The question is would the United Kingdom would the stand idly by or would they help to repel the Chinks?

[If we have China in mind for about 2030 we need a few more CVF than are planned. Maybe we should go back to a four/five carrier navy? 5% of GDP anyone? I don't think the UK have any conflicts planned on that scale. We are currently gearing up on education and healthcare.] It seems to me that neither the UK or France is planning on having to fight in East Asia alone. Neither is Japan, for that matter. To merely be a substantial participant would be enough for them, and they would only need 2-3 light carriers each for that.

Two 65,000 tonners (CVF: Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales) should do then. Maybe with the Ark Royal(out of mothballs) and Ocean to act as Jeep Carriers behind them and LPDs as further jeeps behind those. Labour seem set on pinning defence spending to 2.5% of GDP. This could work if the economy keeps doing well. Maybe if they spend a similar amount on education then it will continue?

Sorry guys but you seem to think that you can defeat China's by now superior armed forces. It's very simple: off the coast of China, China would devour you whole. Off the coast of the US, china would be badly beaten. It's that simple. China will take back Taiwan after the 2008 Olympics.

Speaking of sinodefence.com, I would reccomend reading their forums if you want a good laugh, most the of the posters there exagerate Chinas abilities to the extreme.

The point about CVs without enough escort cover being a liability should be of long-term note to the MoD. The current peg at 2.5% of GDP may be enough in the long run to maintain a Carrier Battle Group within our force structure. I don't know, but it seems to be sailing very close to the wind to me.

Ummmm... can we say BULLSH*T?? Whether you support it or not, it is a plain fact that Bush was able to invade Iraq because the costs of the war are heavily obscured. His own party controls Congress, so no speed bump or frank discussions of need vs. cost there! Do even the right-wing blowhards on this board think that Bush could have gotten even remotely popular support for the war if he had gone on national TV and said "we must take out Iraq, and this is going to require sacrifice... so I am therefore repealing X amount of my tax cuts to pay for the anticipated costs of this war" or the equivalent? Support for the invasion and occupation of Iraq in this country is very hollow - most Americans point blank are not effected by the war today. Not a single one of us is paying a dime for this today; many of us have no close friends of family in the military (FYI: I have one cousin in the marines and one in the army). It just simply doesn't matter to them in any sort of personal way. It's an abstraction on television. Mounting an unprovoked attack on China, so as to eliminate them as a future rival? There is no way that would fly in the same manner. That is not some "splendid little war." There is a reason why no democracy since Athens has embarked on a course like that, you know. So, your logic is overly simplistic and very self-serving. An analogy of it would read like this "simple thinking + self-serving results = FALSE."

I know are on the subject of China and Brits, so I will start from there. Of course the Brits would be involved if (and a big if) China became suicidal and all out attacked Taiwan. The 7th fleet is not weak, for those of you who believe this to be true. Please wake up!!!! We haven't even factored in the Japenese(good air force, and navy), or for that much the US Air Force(Japan, S. Korea), or the Brits, and Aussies. Yes, they would inflict large amounts of casualties on the US forces, but losing nearly half of your military and potentialy large amounts of their infrastruture and cities.....would not be worth the price. The Chinese ecomomy is to young and fragile to withstand a blow as large as this.(it would cripple them) By years end the US will have nearly 80-100(depends on who you talk to) F22's. Also at their diposal are B1's, B2's, B52's,F117's,F16's(nearly 3,000)F15's,F18's,F14's (other special aircraft to be left nameless)...at this point It is not gloating, it is reality. The last time I checked you don't go into a gunfight with a pocket knife, well and live long. Let us not forget Taiwan has quite a good air force themselves. Defeating them in itself would not be an easy feat. On the point of the Brit's.. Do not under-estimate their navy, everyone who has has lost...period (ask the French)...bad subject ...who hasn't beat up the French.

"Well if you think it's beneficial to the discussion to seem like a racist ass, that's completely up to you." Perhaps you should worry about political correctness in China as well. In the South of China they call white people "outside ghosts/devils". They do it all the time and they will tell you it's not insulting. They really don't mean anything by it. Neither do I if I say "I'm hungry, I'm off going top the chinkys".

That should of read: "I'm hungry, I'm off to the chinkys" British people do call the Chinese "Chinks" and they really don't mean anything by it. Neither do the mainland Chinese when they call white people "outside/foreign ghosts/devils". Really, people should be a little less politically correct. I'm thankful that political correctness hasn't run rampant in the UK. It hasn't in the PRC either.
