Subject: The China Syndrome & the British Navy
human7    7/10/2004 10:00:29 AM
If China launches an invasion of Taiwan, the United States would most certainly react. (This whole notion of ambiguity is American PR.) The question is would the United Kingdom would the stand idly by or would they help to repel the Chinks?

OverlordUSA    Simple... If the US could beat China they would've already started the war!   4/7/2005 8:28:40 PM
All of you that think you can beat China fail to see one important fact: You never even tried! The US has shown that it will attack countries they see as enemies and know they can defeat without suffering significant damage. ABSOLUTE FACT!!!! You've justified attacking smaller countries for less. Since the US hasn't attacked China, it's because those in power know even if the US wins, the US loses too. Because China is very capable of inflicting criticle damage on the US and/or anyone else who decides to take on China. I know the ones who masturbate at seeing people killed won't like hearing this, but you're the chickenhawks that won't volunteer to go to Iraq. If you can beat China then why don't you cowards even try? And none of you chickenhawks will ever be able to answer the question.

I know... anything beyond the language of violent American militarism is alien.

"If you can beat China then why don't you cowards even try? And none of you chickenhawks will ever be able to answer the question. " Because we are not impirial or even trying to become impirial. The Chinese have not done anything even remotely agressive or detrimental to our interests. If you knew anything at all about the Military Arts, you would know that the PLA is no match for U.S. forces.

This guy almost sounds like he wants the US to attack to take the pressure off the ChiCom big wigs for their failures. China is all sizzle and no steak. The talk about a moon base in 5 years (that was almost a year ago). They keep talking big, but are nothing but hot air.

Zhang Fei    The Taiwanese combine a sense of entitlement with a sense of moral superiority   5/1/2005 12:28:30 PM
And this is because Taiwanese textbooks largely mirror Chinese textbooks in their treatment of American support for China during the Sino-Japanese War. The common theme here is that the US supported China for two reasons - (1) to use as a weapon against Japan and (2) to partition China in the manner of the Open Door Policy after Japan's defeat. Now, the underlying assumption here is China's entitlement to American support. When a bank lends someone money, the bank benefits from receiving interest, and the borrower benefits from having access to the capital. I don't think people generally think that the borrower has the right to repudiate his debts just because the bank benefits from the loan. But that's the Taiwanese (and Chinese) mentality for you.

Elcid: I think the Chinese could challenge the US Navy in the sense of trying to deliver an embarassment to the US under very limited circumstances. They can do that today. Challenge the US Navy in terms of a great power struggle for regional hegemony? That is still a couple of decades off, at least. While the PLAN has some modern capabilities, none of its good stuff is locally made. Until they started buying their destroyers from the Russians, their best surface vessels featured an awful conglomeration of gear from multiple countries. Logistics and maintenance remains a nightmare! Anyway, I felt like I had to skip a vast swathe of this thread because it opened with a nast tit-for-tat about racial epithets. However, I think there is one very valid point about whether the Brits would get involved in a naval fight with China. Both the Brits and the French are looking at expanding their carrier capability with PRECISELY this kind of scenario in mind. What is more, I doubt very much that India is working so hard on developing a real carrier capability solely out of its prestige value.

"I don't think people generally think that the borrower has the right to repudiate his debts just because the bank benefits from the loan. But that's the Taiwanese (and Chinese) mentality for you. " Would that be along the same lines as having to thank cashiers at a store for taking the time to give you service? I was told that was common behavior in the mainland during the 80s and before.

If we have China in mind for about 2030 we need a few more CVF than are planned. Maybe we should go back to a four/five carrier navy? 5% of GDP anyone? I don't think the UK have any conflicts planned on that scale. We are currently gearing up on education and healthcare.
