Subject: USS Iowa explosion / BB Turret Design

The rumblings about reactivating the Iowa class battleships (which will never happen) has reminded me about the turret explosion that occurred on the Iowa. Does anyone here remember what the conclusion of the idependent investigation was (I was only a kid at the time)? Is the report available on the internet? I can only find that it was believed to be an overram caused by insufficiently trained crew. I also recall hearing that when the turrets were designed, accidents of that nature were expected to occur (eg. 1 in every 5,000 firings) but that the risks was deemed acceptable due to wartime circumstances. I think it had to do with there being no feasible design alternative. Does anyone have any info on this?

I've got the report in one of my books. It's not a small document. At one stage it was also believed that the event occurred due to sabotage. If I recall correctly, the crew had a high level of proficiency. I can try and find it in approx 2 weeks time if you don't get any satidfactory responses on here.

The conclusion was that it was caused by crew error. One of the national scientific laboratories, I believe it was Sandia N.L, recreated the explosion using another identical gun mount. What happened was that someone tried to ram 2 or 3 extra bags of powder in the chamber. The powder charges were so compressed [crushed] that they ignited the black powder booster charge. There was nothing wrong with the gun itself. It had served well and safely for many years. Blame the accident on the public school system which, apparently, no longer teaches students how to COUNT.

Hey I know this is a little late if you are still interested but a few years ago I took a tour of the naval weapons testing center at Dahlgran VA. they have a complete mk7 model 0 set up and was used to do some tests after the Iowas turret explosion. Now the guy that took myself and a friend let us take numerous pictures of this monster (It was massive) His name is Doug Davant he may still be there his e-mail address was and may still be fdavant@nswc.navy.mil I hope that this or any info that you can get will answer any questionsyou may have.

Out of curiosity, was the damaged turret ever restored to use? Could it be restored with the original 16" X 3 guns?

I'm pretty sure it was replaced. I saw her down in Newport RI where she was tied up at Pier 1 for a few years before being taken out to become a museum. Never noticed anything wrong with her. Also as I understand it we still have several spares for these barrels. But they will never be used. Guns, while potent, have limited range. And it takes a crew of 1500 to man them. Just not practical, as much as I love them.
