Since French submarines sank many British convoys, especially in the Indian Ocean in 1941, the practical necessity was also real. Simply couldn't let it fall into German hands and, despite protestations of "plans in the event of capture..." the degree to which Vichy complied with German wishes leaves little doubt this was necessary. If the Danes and the Dutch had the nerve to sink before surrender, why not the French?
