According to the recent GAO report on the Asian adventure of USS Freedom (LCS-1), the "Smart Ship" enhancements that were supposed to allow LCS to operate with a crew of 40 (not counting mission package personnel) have failed miserably.
Despite the navy upping the crew count from 40 to 50, even including the entire mission package crew (the largest additional crew - 17 members - manning the "surface warfare" package), AND the on-board contractors all pitching in, sailors only got 6 hours of sleep each night. More senior personnel (engineers, etc.) got even less.
The other mission packages require only a fraction of the personnel that the "surface warfare" package does, which indicates that the Lockheed marine architects failed miserably when it came down to doing the math regarding shipboard maintenance and workloads for individuals. The report indicated that USS Freedom will therefore be relegated to being either a training or "hazing" ship. Improvements have been made to the newer ships in the class - but the numbers were so far off that now there is concern that the requirement to add personnel is do dire that they'll have to re-design the ship. There is some hope that newer ships in the class will relive the problems somewhat.
No word yet on the Independence class of LCS.
Here's hoping the USS Zumwalt does a LOT better.
