Subject: USS John Murtha

Well Murtha was a Democrat and the Dems control the Government, what can one expect. The Secretary of the Navy has announced the San Antonio class LPD 26 will be named after Murtha who is most recently famous for his slandering the very marines that would be transported on it. I have always disagreed with naming ships after politicians when the traditional names are not. Equating the name Thomas Gates with the famous battles of the Ticonderoga Class CGs or the Henry Jackson with the states of the Ohio class debases the orignal names but naming the city class LPD "Murtha" is an outrage.

DDG-70 "Amazing Grace"

To the USN she was a hero (computers). Certainly a damned sight better as a naval officer and far more effective, than the likes of Beatty, Philips, D"Oyly Hughes and Holland were for the RN.

I'd actually be mostly satisfied with the current naming convention, if we could just ####ing stick with it.

MURTHA is a perfect example of such a screwing up the convention, even before we go into the worthiness of naming a ship after him.

Then there's the mess with submarines.
Seawolf is awesome, but fish don't vote, so now one class has Seawolf, Connecticut, and Jimmy Carter. Talk about confusing.
SSNs used to be cities, but now they're being named after states, which btw SSBNs/SSGNs already claim (except again, the oddball Henry Jackson).

Carriers named after presidents is fine, but then they had to throw in John C Stennis.

There are other examples, and my point is, let's just be consistent.

Love the British ship names though, Broadsword, Invincible, Ark Royal.
Wish we could go back to Hornet, Essex, and other badass names, but that's just not happening.
