Subject: Royal Navy escort fleet kept on longer

should have added to my original post, that gives the RN surface fleet of 2016 (assuming no delays with the CVFs)
 
2 x CVF (65,000 tonnes, 30-50 F-35s each)
1 X LHP (HMS ocean, 21,000 tonnes)
2 x LHD (Bulwark and Albion)
6 x type 45 destroyers
4 X upgraded batch 3 T-22s
13 x upgraded type 23s
 
So, for any operation consisting of a strike carrier force and an amphibious force, we will have 23 escorts before any desicion is made on the FSC (or whatever it's called these days)
 
While not the 35 escorts we had at the end of the '97, it's still a much more optimistic outlook than in the last couple of years when 19 was assumed to be the maximm number available.Those extra 4 do make a big difference....

Better rockets and the backfit of Type 45 electronic warfare kit will go a long way toward making that fleet very effective.
