Subject: Royal Navy escort fleet kept on longer

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200708/cmhansrd/cm081106/text/81106w0011.htm#08110641000110 From hansard, it appears that the current escort fleet is to have it's life extended - that is, the type 23s and last type 22s will now all soldier on into the 2020s, this has massive implications for the fleet in terms of composition and the need for mid life refits including new electronics and weapon systems.... [b]As at September 2007:[\b] Type 22 Class Name Out of service date HMS Cornwall 2015 HMS Campbeltown 2017 HMS Cumberland 2017 HMS Chatham 2018 Type 23 Class Name Out of service date HMS Argyll 2019 HMS Lancaster 2019 HMS Iron Duke 2020 HMS Monmouth 2021 HMS Montrose 2021 HMS Westminster 2021 HMS Northumberland 2022 HMS Richmond 2022 HMS Somerset 2023 HMS Sutherland 2025 HMS Kent 2028 HMS Portland 2028 HMS St. Albans 2029 [b]As at November 2008:[\b] Name Out-of-service date HMS Argyll 2023 HMS Lancaster 2024 HMS Iron Duke 2025 HMS Monmouth 2026 HMS Montrose 2027 HMS Westminster 2028 HMS Northumberland 2029 HMS Richmond 2030 HMS Somerset 2031 HMS Sutherland 2033 HMS Portland 2035 HMS Kent 2034 HMS St Albans 2036 Name Out-of-service date HMS Cornwall 2019 HMS Cumberland 2021 HMS Campbeltown 2020 HMS Chatham 2022

should have added to my original post, that gives the RN surface fleet of 2016 (assuming no delays with the CVFs)

2 x CVF (65,000 tonnes, 30-50 F-35s each)
1 X LHP (HMS ocean, 21,000 tonnes)
2 x LHD (Bulwark and Albion)
6 x type 45 destroyers
4 X upgraded batch 3 T-22s
13 x upgraded type 23s

So, for any operation consisting of a strike carrier force and an amphibious force, we will have 23 escorts before any desicion is made on the FSC (or whatever it's called these days)

While not the 35 escorts we had at the end of the '97, it's still a much more optimistic outlook than in the last couple of years when 19 was assumed to be the maximm number available. Those extra 4 do make a big difference....

Better rockets and the backfit of Type 45 electronic warfare kit will go a long way toward making that fleet very effective.
