Subject: Storn Shadow Naval / SCALP Naval - Royal Navy
DragonReborn    4/28/2008 7:55:02 AM
According to wiki

"MBDA is developing a longer range sea-launched variant, to be called SCALP Naval, to be launched from surface vessels and submarines using the A70 version of the SYLVER launcher on the former. To provide a comparable range to the Tomahawk missile the range of the SCALP Naval would have to be significantly larger than the Storm Shadow".

How would the current block IV Tomahawks compare to a SCALP Naval?

Currently the Royal Navy relies on Tomahawk for its sea launched cruisemissle needs.

"The Royal Navy has recently purchased the Block IV tomahawk which entered service as of the 27th March 2008, three months ahead of schedule".

Would there be any advantage to swithing to the SCALP Naval once its being produced. How easy would it be to transfer from launching Tomahawk to SCALP N?

Would we want to?

May be nice for our submarines.

When we only have six Air Defence Destroyers however, and they each only have 48 missile silos, I don't think we should be sacrificing SAM's for cruise missiles.

Doesnt appear desirable to me because:

1. Block IV 'TacTom' has longer range and is more flexable than Scalp
2. We have got the wrong kind of SYLVER to mount them (dont f8cking ask)
3. Dont want to give more money to the French.
4. For us the SSNs are the best launch platform

Everyone knows the Type 45s are undergunned but I would rather we spent the money on welding in the Harpoon tubes they are wired for.

On Daring you could install cruise missile armoured box launchers immediately outboard and aft of the hangar space.  It's not a huge increase in capability but it's something, especially if the birds are anti-ship.  This shouldn't interfere with helo ops and might give the other guy cause for pause.  Keep the silos for anti-air.

Out of curiosity, could you even fit Tomahawks into the A70's launch cells?

Just asking, because on Mk41 VLS, the Tomahawk is pretty much the biggest thing we carry and it takes up almost the full space of a single cell, while the containers for the SM-2s "fit" the smaller missiles into a larger space. This is because Tomahawk was integrated into the launcher's design.

I'm wondering if A70 launch cells even have the extra space to accomodate a full sized cruise missile or if each cell was designed to most efficiently carry the ASTER missiles.
