niced little vessel.  I was reading a snippet about it my last copy of Sea Technology.

we could use it to replace that POS that Optus use out of Sydney, or we could use it as a mobile acoustics and seismic lab in the Indian Ocean

Outside of its primary research or cable laying role what else do you want to use it for?

They're not exactly suitable for OPV work etc.....

The actual vessel doesn't get launched until Nov 2008 though....  and I can't see them giving it to any country as a freebie.... ;)

I think you could have a hell of a party on the open bridge of that thing! I see skeet shooting off the fan-tail and if the Coast Guard shows up because the Swedish Bikini Team is making too much noise, you can dive.

I wonder how much it costs to keep it down at Dana Point?

It's an Ulstein underwater construction ship intended for the offshore petrol industry.  Mainly I'd use it to keep SBX-type radar platforms on station and away from drydock.  Clear enemy barriers to shipping channels and erect offshore structures.  What the others here have said, too.  Oz might use the ship to surveil drilling rigs and suspected underwater emplacements. The US has submarines that can accomplish most of this ship's functions covertly, I'm not sure that it would be all that worthwhile for US service.  Maybe Paul Allen could use one as a tender for his yacht Octopus and its submarines.
