Subject: LHD procurement plan
Ezekiel    12/2/2007 2:57:16 AM
1) what is considered generally to be the best LHD design?... I was under the impression it is the new canberra class that the aussies are buying two of. 2) what is the specific criteria in which one makes a judgement on a good or bad LHD, including bang for the buck considerations??? 3) How many of thiese crafts would a country need for a force deployment 5000-7000 km away in multiple drop points??? 4) what would be the projected overall naval budget for such a procurement plan envisioned in your LHD program???

4 LHD of the Mistral size are enougth to carry all the vehicles and materials for a 5000 men strong Mecanized brigade (100 MBT, 200 APC, 50 155/120mm tubes and all the usual stuff).

So each ship can carry 25 MBT's, 50 APC's and 12 SPG's in addition to 1,250 troops?

By MBT I was meaning a mix between AMX Leclerc (+50t) and AMX-10RC (+20t). In fact Mistral is said to be sized for 13 Leclercs and somewhat 200 vehicles, 2650m² of vehicle parking+ all what you can put in the 4 LCM if it is a short range assault.
For the men, it is designed for a comfortable 450 trooper for some months, but 600 is not a problem for a week (a lot of empty space: optionnal HQ command center or additionnal hospital).
As I said, only a part of those 5000 men have to be put in the 4 Mistrals, 2400 for a short range assault, 1800 "only" for a months long operation.

The Canberra class will be made up of atleast two spanish built hulls of BPE of 27,900 t.
They can carry ~1,000 troops (978+ 182 additional), a crew ~250, vechicals, landing craft, they can operate a F-35B (questionable carrier capability - manufacturers claim up to 30 can be carried), helicopters, vechicals etc.

Australia is likely to make a few more modifications. Accomodation will change, to a slightly lower standard but possibly allowing more personel. The ski jump may be removed, allowing a 7th helo spot. Certainly weapons, sensor, systems fitout will be unique to Australia

Bar the US wasp and its replacement, they are proberly the most capable LHD. For a nation like Australia two (or hopefully three) would make a huge leap in capability. Prices vary, manufacturer claims about $300-400 million euro, Australia has budgeted over a billion each.

1.what would your LHD procurement policy be if you were to plan an aphibious landing on Egypt?

2. what would your LHD procurement policy be if you were to plan an aphibious landing on Iran?

Surely Australia will have even greater problems defending thise new LHD's in a high intensitve conflict than the Rn will have with our two new carriers.
