That is what the GMD is actually designed to do. Which is why Putin howls whenever the thing works.

Yeah, and if the russians only had thirty icbms instead of the hundreds they do possess then I could see why he might be "worried".Who is GMD supposed to actually defend against anyway?

FITD. You remind me of some other posters. The Congress only authorized 30 launchers. As for the Russians, have you paid  attention to their missile forces at all? The success rate is 50% in operational readiness tests. The Russians seem to be able by our best data to only guarantee two hundred missiles will reach apogee without malfunction.

Do the math.

Hmm,let me see..two hundred minus thirty equals...one hundred and seventy which is more than enough to do utterly unthinkable damage to the us,it looks to me that you have a rather substantial shortfall in the number of required interceptors, thats assuming that your claim of  two hundred russian missiles is correct

You are not very good at math at all . There is a US sea based defense FITD, about ten cruisers' worth in port at any given time. Those carry ABM capability, rather formidable in fact. This is why you fail at this analysis. For you see...  Your math skills and your knowledge in general is incomplete and rather crude. Have a nice day.

Russias total ballistic missile forces both land and sub based number around the six hundred mark, now even if your claim of only"50% in operational readiness tests" is true, and I`ve seen nothing to back that up,it would only apply to the older liquid fuel types dating from the late 70s/early 80s like the ss18 and ss19 so say around 60 of those, the newer types like the 270 odd ss25-29 would have excellent operational readiness as would the 180 odd submarine based missiles. So let us do the math once again 60+270+180=510 missiles vs 30 interceptors and 10+[?] sea based defense ships,I`m sorry but once again the math just doesnt seem to be in your favor. If your goal is a credible bmd system capable of taking on russias entire icbm arsenal then the us is going to need a hell of a lot more land and sea based interceptors

My numbers are accurate. Yours are not.

For example you assume their SLBMs work, whereas I KNOW (never mind how) that those missiles don't and won't.

Similar problems with their mobile land based ICBMs. The only ones they can be sure will get off the ground at all, are their silo based missiles.

Hence my numbers. You can check that by the way. Just study the launch histories.
