Subject: The impact of Directed Energy weapons on airpower?
Charles99    3/2/2009 9:31:22 PM
It seems pretty likely that in the next 10-20 years, laser and other DE weapons will become practical to use at least in the close in defense role. If that's the case, given the advantages (essentially instant hits, the ability to rapidly shift the beam) over missile or projectile based weapons what will be the likely impact in terms of how airpower and missile technology will adapt to it?

Most likely impact is that Warfare will swing from offensive advantage back to defensive advantage, due to in place installations of lasers being better suited to defend territory rather than attack.

DEWS will inevitably spur the creation of counter-DEWS technologies. "Shields at maximum, Keptein"...
