Subject: AMRAAM Sams for Australian please.
Aussiegunner    9/5/2003 12:00:23 AM
See the article on AMRAAM SAM's? The system would be perfect for Australia. This is because it is readily deployable in defence of the army in the field, but has a long enough range and an anti-cruise missile capability that make it good enough to defend our facilities at home. Seems like the obvious choice to me.

I don't agree on BMD. If Australia is to participate in operations as part of an alliance with the US and others, it needs protection from ballistic missiles. This is because the best way for countries like China and North Korea to weaken the alliance, is to intimidate partners like Australia with ballistic missile attack, to that we don't participate. It would only take 1 of China's 20 ICBM's, aimed at Sydney, to achieve this. This is even before considering that some extreme regimes would probably like to kill a couple of million Westerners, even if they are in Sydney, just because they don't worship Allah. We need to be prepared for this possibility. As for defence from ship or sub based missiles, even the US navy can't be guarenteed to destroy the launch platform before an attack. you have to be prepared for the likely eventuality that a missile would be launched, with BMD assets in place for the intercept.

I have a feeling that you consider a BMD a tomorrow's reality, and as bullet-proof as a meter of steel. But at the moment it doesn't look that promising at all. I'm sure that just because BMD is being developed, China will have modernized ICBMs way before US will make any real progress with BMD. All they need is to modernize the warheads the SS-18 way: 10 low-yeild MIRVs + truckload of miscellaneous decoys including jammers and other stuff. This is uncomparably easier than creating any of the BMD components, even a lousy one. Point is: how can you bet the fate of the whole nation on a foreign system that doesn't guarantee the result even in theory? US population and sensitive targets are spread across a large territory, but 86% of aussies are concentrated in large cities, with something like 12 out of 18 millions in Sydney. With such a high risk of total destruction it would be insane risking to get even a couple of nukes over 2/3 of the total population.

We are already entirely dependent on the US for our defence against ballistic missile strike, ie, we come under their nuclear deterrant umbrella. Why not improve our odds by participating in BMD? There is no other way that we can do so, as far as I can see. In any case, I think the interceptors will be nuclear armed, making decoys useless. The non-nuclear warhead is only a smokescreen, because nuclear armed interceptors are far more controvertial.

The alternative to BMD would be to acquire our own deterrant. I would rather we worked on BMD than actively participated in Nuclear proliferation. The argument with regard to the concentration of the Australian population making it an attractive target may even suggest that Australia should acquire both!

I agree. However, remember that we are a major uranium producer, have a feasable nuclear delivery system(the F-11) and had nuclear tests on our soil. I wouldn't be suprised if therewere a few old A-Bombs sitting around in some shack in Woomera, for a rainy day. The Chief of the Defence force, the service Chiefs and some maintainence staff would be the only ones who would need to know about it, until the need arose.

Now you are at Woomera, there might still be a few slightly bent Supermarine Swift fighters out there; but as someone said: That was the only task the Swift was suited for!

I doubt that there are any nuclear weapons left, as in those days they were not produces serially and more or less one off's - but then you never know!

How mean of You LOL! That would definately have ruined the prospects of Mary Donaldson to marry our Crown Prince - at least in the popular press. Frederik is known to go after hot looking women; but nuclear hot????

Hey Folks, The system would have longer range, though a Humvee could only carry two. Sincerely, Keith
