The government has announced an effort to replace nearly all foreign technology with Chinese tech by the end of the decade. This means Chinese software, computers, industrial gear, airliners and, of course, weapons are to replace all foreign equipment. China is well on its way to that goal already.

Like hell they are.

This is a joke, the Chinese have no home grown capability of replacing any technology. The only demonstrated capability they have is to steal, ape and paint over.  You must understand that the reason they don't honor patent and copyright laws is because they have nothing to patent or copyright.  Technology cannot be forced by a 5 year plan,:"this year we're going to develop new drugs, next year new type battery and the next 5 year plan will be for a computer in every home". Technology grows out of the soil of a market economy.  Just because they build Buicks, copies of Soviet fighters and use old American dies (which we gave them) to build airliners does not mean they can replace 100 years of internal combustion engine development  with a new type engine, design a fighter from scratch without outside influence a or replace airliner construction techniques with something only they have a key to. I doubt that they even understand that the final design of all three of these items depends not on its capabilities be on the ability of a factory to mass produce it.

I think that much of Chinese act is deception. They are trying to keep their next major move secret. I think it is the part of their traditions.

Keffler and Avatar, good points; This is the "Sorcerer's Apprentice Syndrome", in spades. Chinese people have a lot of potential, individually, but until they allow individuals the freedom and liberty to have full human rights with liberty, they will all continue to suffer and not prosper politically and economically, as we do in the West.
