Subject: 1 German soldier killed, 3 wounded in IED attack near Kunduz
Nasty German Idiot     8/27/2008 10:02:40 AM
translation from Spiegel.de, by me:

A member of the Fallschirmjägerbrigade 263 from Zweibrücken was killed and 3 of his comrades wounded today north of Kunduz when their convoy was hit by an IED. The armored Wolf was completely destroyed. It was the first time a German soldier had been killed since 15 month, when on May 27, 2007 an suicide bomber killed 3 German soldiers on a marketplace in Kunduz. Both Chancellor Angela Merkel and foreign Minister Steinmeier expressed their condolences to the families of the killed soldiers, but stressed the fight against the Taliban will go on. In autumn, the German Parliament will decide over the plan to send another 1000 additional soldies to Afghanistan. (will be passed with great majority, grand coalition has already decided.)

My condolences to the comrades and families of the soldiers. My son is going to Afghanistan next spring and they are experiencing my worst nightmare.

It looks like the Taliban is making a special point of ambushing units from countries who have previously avoided direct military action. Their ability to rapidly concentrate around isolated units is troubling.

The Taliban have again attacked a Bundeswehr-Convoy 45 kilometers west of its base in Kunduz.  In the morning, an explosin was heard as an Improvised explosive device was detonated near the travelling vehicles.  Local Afghan police was called in for investigation. In the recent attack, only minor damages were caused.  On thursday, one German soldier was killed and 3 wounded when a similar attack happened in Kunduz.

May this brave rest in peace. Hope the three wounded will recover soon.

I fully agree, about the current Taliban attacks on what they think are the weakest coalition members. This is not time for the coalition to tear appart.

And their capacity of quick reaction  is quite surprising too. I feel they have a pretty good intelligence.

It's time for more aggressive Nato operations, or we'll totally loose initiative.
