Subject: Afghanistan Democracy Back Slidding?
Griffin    7/29/2006 7:39:46 PM
There was another report today about an attempt to subject women in Afghanistan to conditions similar to that of under the Taliban. News reports are indicating that once again a faction in the Afghan parliament are trying to re-establish the 'Vice and Virtue Department', which is the same name the Taliban gave to their religious zealots - read thugs and murderers - that would execute women in stadiums, beat them on the streets, refuse education to them, and otherwise drive the society into something none of us would like to see again. Of concern is that President Karzai is not driving back these forces. Some Taliban leaders and war lords who don't particularly care for democracy now sit as parliamentarians. Considering the blood being spent in that country by our troops, this is a very disconcerting piece of news.
