Subject: Ahmad Shah Masoud

This is in response to the previous post. Ahmad Shah Masoud was the most effective Afghan resistance commander in the war against the Soviets (1979-1989). His idependant style and Afghan nationalism made him fall out with the Pakistani government (Which was distributing American supplied arms to the Afghan resistance) early on in the war. Since Pakistan had planned to install a puppet regime in Afghanistan following the Soviet withdrawl, it saw people like Masoud as threats. So, it did its utmost to discredit Masoud in the eyes of the Americans. Masoud by the way is not a Shia, he is a Sunni. And, stinger missiles were sold to Iran by Shia resistance groups, not by Masoud. Anyway, part of the problem today is that the US does not trust Masoud because Pakistan of Pakistani interference. So, without support, the opposition to the Taliban is weak and will remain so until the US sees the situation for what it is and finally helps Masoud.
