The pirates deserve nothing less than a bullet in the head.

If evidence is an issue, I wonder what it would cost to run some slow freighters without lookouts...and a cargo of troops on board.

OVER 2000 tons of weapons on board and the crew didn't think to break open crates and defend their ship?  We'll see how long insurance companies put up with this pacifism.

33 T-72's at around 41 tons apiece make up the bulk of that 2,000 tons (1353). The rest is spares and ammo for those tanks.

It might be more than a bit difficult for untrained sailers to unpack a T-72 and then move it around on the deck of a cargo ship.

Apart from the problem with operating tanks, I doubt an untrained civilian crew (of which the ordinary sailors are probably from low-income countries and only make a pittance) is going to take up arms to fight against somewhat experienced pirates.

Although I'd guess the T-72's would at least make for excellent hide-outs for the crew.
I doubt even drugged out pirates would fire RPG's while being within the same ship themselves and those T-72's, how clapped out should be relatively safe from small-calibre fire.

Since pulling off crap like this is the only way to get some money for a lot of Somalis, they have to eat, I don't see this behavior ending anytime soon.

I was being a bit facetious in pointing out the irony of the article stating 2,000 tons of weapons (including 33 T-72 tanks) were seized.  Of course 1400 tons are the tanks themselves, but you are assuming the rest of the weight is "spares and ammo" since the article did not say.  It IS possible that other items were on board that could have been used for defense.  But alas, I too will assume as "theflyingdutchman" stated that the crew were untrained and probably clueless to the danger in that area, and on top of that probably drunk.
