HR    They needed them...   3/9/2015 9:42:13 AM
This is a far more capable aircraft than an F-16 and will give them something to counterbalance what their neighbors are buying.

Nate Dog    Doubt capability has much to do with it   3/9/2015 10:11:39 AM
Didn't you read the article?
OPEC (well, the arab contingent) paid for 12 of these fighters, and the French government has paid for the other 12 on some very risky credit deal with a country that has been bankrupt since 2012 but for the gulf states graces.
I doubt very much if the Dutch government, Boeing or even the Russians are that desperate for sales. I doubt there were many other companies/countries giving away brand new aircraft.
I've no doubt their a fine craft, and for the price of free, hell, i'd take 'em!

Egypt has a need for a regional bomber. Rafale fills the need. Neither Britain nor America will sell OFFENSIVE weapons compatible with their F-16s. The French are desperate.... extremely desperate to secure a sale. The Rafale comes complete with French PGM's. Israel has cause to worry.

P.S., as capable as an F-16? Maybe, in the bombing role. As capable overall? Decidedly not.

Spiky    French Despair :(   3/9/2015 12:10:05 PM
Actually chuckled a little when I read this.......... "This latest sale to Egypt is a much needed to boost for Dassault and an aircraft that has not been selling well. What helped make this sale happen was Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and UAE providing half the financing and the French government guaranteeing most of the other half." Well, I guess now the French can now boast to the Indians that Egypt bought the Rafale. I know that Brazil turning the Rafale down had to hurt.

Two engines, great pay-load and range... there is a Naval version too. It is a great plane. But there are politics involved in any high stake purchase of military hardware and the French have not been able to fight that. The Eurofighter has been their nemesis along with the F-35. And that is another problem... Rafale are not cheap while a Gripen is (Brazil).

HR    Textron's Scorpion   3/9/2015 1:49:26 PM
I could not believe it when I read it...

"The Air Force again concluded it should phase out the A-10, after an oddly brief reconsideration period (a week). The plan is to move the close air support mission to F-16s and F-15s until such time as the F-35A can take on the role, which is not expected to be soon. General Herbert Carlisle, head of Air Combat Command mused that at some point after the A-10 budget has been shunted to the F-35 program, the Air Force could conceivably replace it, and even named a potential contender, the Textron Airland Scorpion." - Defense Industry Daily.

Before anyone salivates about this... a Scorpion would need many modifications to function as a "full-time" attack aircraft. And you never know if the choice of words was intended to send a message to Defense Contractors about the importance of economy in the next attack aircraft and that if they did not behave they would loose the order.

They are complementary... the F-16 has short legs. It is an air superiority fighter that goes up, dog fights and comes back down to re-arm / refuels and and then goes back up and does it all over again... The Rafale has range, two engines and can be used as an interceptor, for maritime strikes and as a real bomber carrying a huge load of ordinance and do all that while the F-16 protects its air-fields and other strategic assets.
