I note with interest that the Russians continue to variate the Su-27 with derivatives. This says something about the STATE of Russian aeronautics. It is not a good state to be in.

I often wondered about this but is their a limit to what they can build - a technological Glass Ceiling above which they can still design but don't have the industrial capability to manufacture ?

There's no way that all of those aircraft are that cheap. A basic Su-30M would cost about $28 Million, but the Su-34 and Su-35 have to be much more expensive. I've read estimates placing them closer to $50 Million and $75 Million, which seems much more plausible given the state of the Russian defense industry, the technology integrated into these aircraft, and recent Western fighters of similar complexity like the R-18E Super Hornet and Rafale. Granted, though much of the cost of Western Bloc weapons stems more from cost inflation practices and poor cost management, there's still no way an Su-35 could possibly be that cheap.

The problem with comparisons is that western aircrafts sales numbers often include training for both ground and air crews as well as spare parts and certain support that runs the price millions over the bare aircrafts' cost. And other things like better engines that last longer but cost more as well as airframes that can be flown for more hours also inflate the cost of western aircrafts. And the Russians try to keep things simple which often means less expensive and some of their buyers appreciate that.
