Russian jet aviation effort started by copying Rolls-Royce engine. Now, China is doing the same thing. However, British engine was purchased legally, with blueprints and license rights.

  That's true, it was at the end of WWII. The Allied powers were still relatively comfortable with each other and the Labor Government in England approved the deal. FDR was dead, Truman was still finding his way around and Churchill was out of office. Only Stalin was left and he was still playing nice with the west so the deal went through.

But the Russians started with RR and their current engines STINK.
 
The Chinese started with RUSSIAN engines so theirs really are awful.
 
And the Americans had the sense to parallel track their own lines of development after they saw the early English engines off., and now when you want engines that work, it is GE and the Pratts.
