| More likely the Assault Commanche is a result of faith in 1) materials tech (stealth will be "applied" to aircraft rather than built around it; 2) the ability of our competitors to trumph stealth tech (can't put all your eggs in the stealth basket); and finally, 3) FORCOM knows that if leaders have access to a tool that works they will tend to over use it - ergo - use the commanche for missions that require far more firepower than a recon ship will deliver. Consider that the reconship of the future will be a UAV and even that may be armed - what is the role of the commanche? raiding? Nope - deep strike - which means you're going to have to give it all the teeth you can. Conceptually, the mission of the commanche will be the same as CAP in WWII- hit anything that moves. Therefore the new version fills the role of the typhoon or the warthog. But don't get me started on ground support... |
