Lockheed Martin saw a $920.4 million advanced acquisition contract on Thursday for the F-35 program. This award covers the production of 94 low rate initial production Joint Strike Fighters, with these spread across the three F-35 variants.. 78 F-35A models will be manufactured and delivered, with 44 of these destined for the Air Force and the remainder earmarked for international partners. The other 16 aircraft are split between the -B and -C models, with fourteen of the former going to the Marine Corps, as well as Italy and the UK, while two -C models will go to the Navy and Marines.

Give me 2 B-2s and about 8 raptors. They could drop MOPs on the MT, and mine They sub pen entrance, in 1 pass. No need for tactical Weapons

WASHINGTON: Here’s today’s news: the rotor failure that ripped apart an F-35A June 23 last year caused $50 million in damage to the aircraft, the Air Force’s Accident Investigation Board said today.

Here’s the official version of what happened to the Air Force’s Joint Strike Fighter. “The engine failed when the third stage forward integral arm of a rotor fractured and liberated during the takeoff roll,” the investigation found. “Pieces of the failed rotor arm cut through the engine’s fan case, the engine bay, an internal fuel tank, and hydraulic and fuel lines before exiting through the aircraft’s upper fuselage. Damage from the engine failure caused leaking fuel and hydraulic fluid to ignite and burn the rear two thirds of the aircraft. The total mishap damage is estimated to be in excess of $50 million.”

You may never look at the F-35 the same again.

In his anaylsis an F-35 in optimal conditions, and a max range strike mission, compares nicely to a F-15E

War is boring launches another attack on the F-35. Gross misrepresentations in RED.

The F-35’s Bomb-Dropping Exercise Is a P.R. Stunt: The Troubled Stealth Fighters Carry Few Bombs and Still Can’t Use Their Guns (excerpt)
The U.S. Air Force has announced that F-35As will practice air strikes at a major exercise. For two weeks, Air Force pilots will bombard mock targets and fly support missions as soldiers train below.

But just what the F-35 pilots will get out of their trip isn’t clear. The stealth fighters carry few bombs, still don’t have the computer code to use their guns … and have trouble taking off and landing.

The practice session is Green Flag West 15–08. The exercise links ground troops fighting mock battles at Fort Irwin in California with Air Force planes situated at nearby Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

Green Flag West 15–08 kicked off on May 29 and this particular exercise is the eighth of 10 such events scheduled this year, according to the Nellis website.

“You can’t really overstate the importance of joint training exercises like Green Flag for both services,” historian Brain Laslie, author of The Air Force Way of War, told War Is Boring in an email. “They’re conducted in as realistic a manner as possible … and they provide the services an excellent opportunity to work together.”

F-15 and F-16 fighter bombers and the slower flying A-10 strike aircraft?—?all planes the flying branch intends to replace with the F-35?—?regularly show up for Green Flag West.

Predator and Reaper drones, lumbering B-52 bombers, E-3 and E-8 radar planes, EC-130 jammers and KC-135 tankers are also common participants, according to an official factsheet.

Take all those planes?—?then add the F-35. But at the least, the troubled jet’s involvement in the training missions seems to be a public relations stunt.

In January, the Pentagon’s top weapon tester released a scathing report about the Joint Strike Fighter’s progress. The review contained a laundry list of serious issues, including stubborn problems with the millions of lines of computer code in the jet’s flight computers, malfunctioning $400,000 helmets, maintenance issues and more.

“The gains for F-35 pilots will be minimal until they can practice exploiting its full capabilities,” Tony Carr, a retired Air Force officer and outspoken critic of the branch, told War Is Boring. “It’s fair to question whether this is an attempt to portray the F-35 sprinting before it has learned to crawl.” (end of excerpt)

1. Carries Few Bombs: What are all the drop tests for then that are video taped now on a regular basis?
What the heck is this? Even If the plane cant do certain things becasue of software, Saying the plane cant carry a decent load is a FLAT out lie!

2. Trouble taking off and landing? He didnt see OT-1? he didnt see how many sorties were flown?

3. Replace the F-15?: Please Mr AXE! please spend less time playing around in the Iraqi Dsert, and do more reporting. Your research is lacking. Your site is stale. and Im removing from my daily rotation (REad book mark).
The F-35 was never intended to replace the F-15!

Nothing new or unexpected. Am still a little concerned about indicated cruise ceiling in the loaded condition for the F-35. The Sukhois still retain their altitude advantage when loaded as air to air only and that's NOT good for us..

Keff I wish I could contact this guy and ask him to compare Su35 numbers. What is the op cruise altitude profile for a heavy A2A loaded F-16? That would give you a close comparison.

Spurts gives it (the F-16C numbers CAP) to you (around 10,000-12,000 meters at 0.8-1.2 M?) and discusses why the Sukhoi is so dangerous by comparison. I think its around page 5 or 6 in the thread and tabled in a 500 nmi mission plan  chart that describes an air to air intrusion with the F-16Cs burdened with CFTs.

He plainly did a LOT of work to compare the F-35 A to the Beagle and the Falcon. He hasn't modeled the Sukhoi. His comments on lift, drag, mass, versus fuel fraction are well known, understood truths and reflect the nickname I give the Sukhoi (the Kite) because of its lightness compared to size.when it has burned off fuel.
