Growler seduces and deceives. To kill a Flap Lid, Clam Shell  or a (appropriately named because it is a good one) Tombstone takes a lot of radiated and broadcasted power into specialized pulsed radio waves.

Just to be clear. This kills all the susceptible electronics within range; ALL of them.

So your thinking of more along the lines of either 1. That champ missile program the USAF is afraid of deploying or 2. The long promised F-22/35 upgrade that allows the aesa to be used as a DE weapon?

The air force is properly afraid of CHAMP. Apparently it is TOO effective. AESA radars are claimed to possess 'magical' properties. Inverse square law applied to radiation and other things make me suspicious of the radar as used in such a manner. I prefer dedicated MASERS for that role. I KNOW that works.

Akin to the suggestion that we kick off Desert Storm with an hi altitude air burst nuclear weapon....for EMP.  Other GIANT issues aside, the suggestion assumes that the EMP wouldn't have affected the US & (more importantly) other Coalition Forces in at least as bad if not worse fashion than the ostensible Iraqi targets.

Frying electronics sounds nice, but if it fires ALL electronics....h'hhhhhm no thanx.

A MASER (microwave amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation) is a class of LASER that works in the atmosphere with little scatter effect that you see in many other lasers (it's a radio beam), is very tuneable at the emitter, is coherent (means the beam is very narrow with little spread over distance) and can be AIMED at specific targets.

I don't like EMP bombs or electromagnetic pulse weapons any more than you do for the reasons you mention.

But the problem with MASERS is that they cook people to death caught in the beam path at the power levels we're discussing. The original "DEATH RAY". Can you imagine the PC crowd's outcry when the first MASERS go into battle?

I guess, for the Soccer Mom's...to me dead is dead...AIM-120C or MASER it's all the same....

The F-35 is lookig cheaper by the day.

France reportedly offered India a 25% price drop in order to seal the deal for 36 Rafales in April. The French also agreed to an extended maintenance schedule, with the 36 fighters thought to be the minimum number they would sell. The deal is thought to bring the per-unit cost of the Rafale to around $220 million, far below the approximate $300 million pricetag which became the death-knell for the Indian negotiations with Dassault. The recently announced Qatari order saw a comparable cost of $290 million per aircraft.

$1.5 billion Project Starts at RAAF Base Williamtown
(Source: Australian Dept. of Defence; issued May 6, 2015)
Construction of the New Air Combat Capability Facilities at RAAF Base Williamtown has commenced.

The new facilities will support the introduction, operation and deployment of the F-35A Lightning II – Joint Strike Fighter.

Australia has committed to the acquisition of 72 F-35A aircraft, which will provide aircrew with a fifth generation aircraft at the forefront of air combat technology.

Turning of the first sod today marks the commencement of an almost $1.5 billion project that will provide facilities for the aircraft at ten bases across the country. Of this, the RAAF Base Williamtown facilities are expected to bring about $950 million worth of work into the Newcastle region.

Over the next seven years, the project will provide welcome investment opportunities that will deliver direct and indirect economic benefits, particularly in the Newcastle region, with the potential for local-subcontractors to be part of the construction works.

Facilities will also be constructed at RAAF Base Tindal near Katherine in the Northern Territory, RAAF Bases Townsville and Scherger in Queensland, RAAF Base Darwin in the Northern Territory, RAAF Bases Curtin, Learmonth and Pearce in Western Australia, RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia and Defence Establishment Myambat in NSW.

The introduction of the F-35A aircraft to RAAF Base Williamtown assures its position as our premier fighter training base for Australia’s air combat pilots.

The first F-35A aircraft will arrive in Australia in late-2018, with Squadron Leader Andrew Jackson, from RAAF Base Williamtown, recently qualifying as the first Australian F-35A pilot.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Contrary to what is stated above, Australia has not “committed to the acquisition of 72 F-35s,” but has so far only “committed” to, and in fact ordered, two aircraft.
This distinction was made excruciatingly clear during a June 4, 2014 hearing in the Australian Senate that makes for very instructive reading.
It plans to order six more in 2016 and another six in 2017 but, again, these are only plans.
The current government has publicly stated it plans to eventually buy 72, but that is not a commitment, however much spin one places on the phrase.)  http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/release/163414/raaf-spends-a%241.5bn-to-upgrade-f_35-base.html

Well....

1. The F-35 A SMOKES on takeoff but burns clean in cruise.
2. Take-off run is SHORT and climb-out is steeper than I expected (presumed unburdened.).
3. We grow them pretty... (the planes, guys.)
