 The U.S. has agreed to sell Saudi Arabia 84 F-15s. These are special models, similar to the two-seater F-15E, and unlike the single seat F-15s the Saudis already have.

The Saudis already operate a 2-seat Strike Eagle variant.

The Saudis have previously purchased a total of 170 F-15s in three batches:
* In the 1980s, they purchased a total of 55 F-15Cs and 19 F-15Ds under Peace Sun I and a subsequent attrition replacement purchase.

* During the leadup to the Gulf War, they purchased 24 ex-USAFE F-15Cs to boost their fighter strength.

* In the 1990s, they purchased 72 2-seat F-15S models under the Peace Sun IX program.  The F-15S is a derivative of the F-15E Strike Eagle, with downrated ECM and a modified APG-70 radar that lacks terrain following capability.

How do the Saudis see their  current security situation I wonder?

@Phaid,
the AN/APG-70 has a TF capability? For what does it use the AN/AAQ-13?  To my understanding the APG-70 has a degraded mapping resolution on the F-15S and the nav LANTIRN pod was possibly not delivered to the Saudis or at least lacked the TFR.

Sorry, I totally jumbled that sentence.  The F-15S lacks terrain following capability, has downrated ECM, and has an APG-70 radar with fewer modes and lesser targeting capabilities than the U.S. version.

The Saudi F-15S has a modified ASW-51 auto flight control system that lacks a TFR interface.  So even with a fully functional LANTIRN setup the F-15S cannot do hands-off terrain following.  In any event the F-15S's were delivered with AAQ-20 Pathfinder pods / AAQ-19 Sharpshooter pods in place of AAQ-13 / AAQ-14 LANTIRN.  Compared to LANTIRN, the AAQ-20 do not include a TFR, and the AAQ-19 lacks laser-guided AGM-65 compatibility and air to air modes.

The APG-70S on the F-15S has only 60% of the APG-70's bandwidth, and only 16 channels instead of 32.  It also has a much lower SAR resolution; the smallest map it can generate in High Resolution Mapping mode is 4.7 nm across, compared to 0.67 nm in the F-15E.

>>>"Saudi Arabia, and other Arab Gulf states (the UAE, Kuwait, Iraq) have more than tripled their purchases of American weapons over the last five years, as they strive to protect themselves from an increasingly aggressive and hostile Iran."

-Should read, "an increasingly resistant Iran that will not bow to the Axis of Greed."

@Phaid,
thanks for the information. Never heared about the AAQ-19/20 before, or at least can't remember. Time to do some research in that area.
