Subject: Sukhoi 1st------Mikoyan 2nd
Bronix    6/2/2004 10:53:58 AM
In the history of Russian air force, mikoyan is always the fore leader in russian military aircraft. From Mig-3 in WWII to the famous Mig 15,Mig 17,Mig 19, Mig 21 to Mig-23 in the cold war.Mikoyan always produce fine fighter/attacker(Mig-27).

While Sukhoi always seem like a supporting role of russian air force, producing also good attacking aircraft like Su-7,Su-17 and Su-24 to boost russian air force attacking cablilites but was never as important as Mikoyan.Their top interceptor Su-15 to challenge Mig-23 had limited capabilites and always end up in the wrong side story with accidentally down a Korea passenger airplane.

But when come to the end of cold war and present, this situation changes rapidly with russian air force top interceptor/fighter/bomber all coming from Sukhoi. From Su-27,Su-30MMk,Su-32 to Su-35 being hail as the finest Russian air force can offer with order from Vietnam,Malaysia,China,India and Indonesia while Mig-29 order had drop dramatically in recent years and remain service with most russian allies for friendship, not base on its merit(supplied to them before the end of cold war)! Even Mikoyan strongest area of intercepting role is robbed by Sukhoi. While Sukhoi strong area of attacking is expanded and has also consolidate the fighter/intercepting area. The only current project Mikoyan can offer is Mig-35 which is sabotaged by the lack of fund while Su-37 also has the same problem but their Su-35 had shown the world even with limited fund their project can still be succeed! What will the future of Mikoyan be?

Sukhoi has done a much better job at marketing than MiG. I question whether or not the early Su-27s were better than the MiG-29, but Sukhoi was able to convince people that they were. On a side note, the Su-15 did not "accidentally" shoot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007. It was entirely deliberate.

MiG was NOT the pre-eminant Soviet fighter manufacturer during World War II. They did not come into their own until the MiG-15. It should not be too surprising to see them moving out of the lead after four decades of supremacy. Teams evolve and more capable groups often overtake others. McDonnell aircraft weren't particularly innovative in the forties and fifties, but their aircraft of the sixties and seventies were superb. Now they are clearly in decline in the fighter realm. And what happened to North American? The Mustang and Sabre were world beaters, but the F-100 was broadly surpassed by its peers and North American hasn't been a factor in subsequent fighter programs. -- Shaken - out --

Is MiG planning any new generation fighter? The upgraded MiG-29s are still an impressive aircraft. India just purchased a bunch of naval versions and Algeria is close to buying 50 new upgraded MiG-29s.

The Russian airforce is also upgrading its MiG-29s.

MiG was pretty much outclassed by Yakovlev and Lavochkin during the war, their only big splash was the mig1/3 which was the fastest high altitude interceptor in the world until mid 42...pretty much it had its day in the sun over Moscow in 41

Mig 1.44 the testing vs, and Mig 1.42. Overall, I'd say Mig 1.44 is a ruthess air killer, stealth, fast, long range, nice payload capacity. In long range missile standoff it prob surpass Su-30MKI/35/37. Really sad that there're "no funds" for this project. Im begging to suspect that Sukhoi got bit jealous of Mig 1.44 and decided to choke off the program with their nnfluence, and the directors contacts.

PAK-FA... PAK-FA... PAK-FA... The S-37 and MiG-1.44 were technology demonstrators, not fighter prototypes. Both MiG and Sukhoi competed development design programs and in the end Sukhoi was selected. Both technology demonstrators have pretty much been set aside, although there is some thought that the S-37 will be used in the PAK-FA development program. (PAK-FA has F-22 style wings, not forward swept). It is not a case of one bureau using influence to crush the other. It is simply that Russia can only afford one development program (and they might not be able to afford that) and one side had to win. -- Shaken - out --
