< link > A PLAAF general appeared on CCTV's airforce special documentary today, confirmed that they were putting finishing touches to first prototype of China's F-22 class fighter and will make its maiden flight shortly, and hope to introduce into service within 8~10 years. The announcement of Chinese 5th gen fighter deployment as early as 2017 forces China's neighbors to go with Typhoon(Second best air-superiority fighter after F-22, which can engage stealth fighters with AWACS assist), or pressure the US to sell them F-22 to counter Chinese F-22 class fighters deployed in a massive volume.

What vulnerability? You  do realize that a smear track is useless for orienting a tracking radar or guiding a weapon?

You need to stop reading the Klown Klub. Copp and Goon do not know what they discuss. Neither do the internet fanboys.

Russians subscribe to L-band radar defeating stealth theory, hence PAK-FA has it and advanced version of Su-35 have it.



 
 
Thales SMART-L also claims anti-stealth capability.

Each of your last several posts (well, most of your posts since you started plaguing us with them, really) are seriously flawed.  You really would be well-served to just stop opining for a few weeks or months, and just read past threads here about LO and about a China/Taiwan war, because there is just too much to cover.  Since there is clearly no reason to assume you actually are teachable (given what has already transpired in these last few months), it just isn't worth the investment of time and effort to try to do it for you.
 
Just one example is that the is nothing new about L-band radars.  In fact, nearly all air surveillance, SAM target acquisition radars, and the most modern multi-function SAM target engagement radars are L-band or *lower*--yet since F-35 is "optimized for ground attack" (as so many fanboys claim whenever they allege the F-35 won't be the 2nd-best air-to-air fighter in the world), then just exactly what radar frequency ranges do you think the F-35's LO will be optimized against?  Of course, there's still far more to that subject and the overall subject of the effectiveness of LO and its impact on aerial combat than merely the frequency of a search radar.  This has been covered in many SP threads already.

X-band. It was a cost compromise. F-35 had to do so many things at low-cost that it had too many design compromises, plus intentional downgrade of export models by the US, to be as effective as F/A-117.

The fact that F/A-117's successor is F-22 and not F-35 is revealing enough.

I'll just state that basically everything you've said of a technical nature regarding the F-22, the F-35, and the J-14 is seriously flawed, and therefore your conclusions concerning them and a future China-Taiwan War are erroneous, and leave it at that.
 
Congratulations, as best I recall, you are the first poster on SP in the last six years on this site that I've concluded is literally not worth trying to explain anything to, due to being so wrong about so much yet being so sure about your wrong answers that you are incapable of learning about the subject you are talking about.  Arguing with Bluewings and French Stratege is more productive than dealing with you.

SlowMan, I'll attempt to address some of your "concerns" about a possible China-Taiwan war circa 2025:
 
1) Assuming that the J-XX can indeed supercruise (not a for sure thing, given the poor track record of Chinese engine development), that will certainly help.  However, it should be recognized that whatever PLAAF fighters are in action over Taiwan, they will be operating at the edge of their operational radius.  They will constantly have to keep one eye on the fuel gauge.  The F-35s--assuming they're operating from Taiwanese soil--won't. 
 
2) The F-35's main job will not necessarily be achieving air superiority over Taiwan, but killing the Chinese troops trying to land there.  It will be the job of the F-22 to hold off the fighters--true, the F-22s will be outnumbered, but numbers aren't the only factor to take into account, such as pilot quality and the ability of either side to sustain high tempo operations.  The USAF and the USN have proven that; the Chinese have not.  (Though I agree that the end of F-22 production is a huge mistake.)
 
3) The Chinese will not be able to concentrate their entire fighter strength against Taiwan--that's ludicrous.  They'll have to hold fighters back to defend their coastline, unless they want USN F-18s hitting Chinese shipping in Hong Kong and the Yellow Sea.  An all-out war between China and the US would lead to at the least cruise missile strikes against the PLA's embarkation ports.  The Ohio-class SSGNs alone might overwhelm Chinese air defenses.  Talk of air-to-air battles over Taiwan is well and good, but if the PLA can't even get ashore, the whole thing is moot.
 
4) Loss of bases in Japan due to Hatoyama is possible, but it's not likely Hatoyama will still be in power by 2020.  Japan may not particularly appreciate the paternalistic approach of the US, but they'd much rather have to deal with us as allies than deal with China alone--as enemies.  I know Hatoyama wants to increase ties to China, but we both know how long memories are in the Far East, and Chinese-Japanese mutual loathing goes back 2000 years.  I don't give Hatoyama much chance, and if war breaks out over Taiwan, all bets are off.  Even if Kadena is closed by then, it can be rapidly reopened for American use.  The Okinawans might be more circumspect, because of Taiwan goes, they can be reasonably assured they're next on China's menu.  (Even if Japan stayed neutral, there's nothing saying that South Korea or Vietnam would.  Vietnam in particular has a hatred for the Chinese that exceeds that of Japan's.)
 
5) Is the Chinese AWACS as good as it's American counterpart?  I don't know much on that subject myself, but at first blush I would say it is not quite as capable as the E-3--otherwise, China wouldn't have been trying so hard to get Israeli help on the project.
 
6) This is all predicated on the fact that the J-XX is as good as the F-22.  It's possible, but given past track records...unlikely.

 This is my first post in quite some time, in the intervening period I was hoping that this idiot (slowman) would have been banned/restricted. It appears that several weeks/months later he is still producing reams of unqualified assertions that rely on sources that have absolutely no credibility.
 
I find it incredible that he can list any Chinese news outlet as credible, and any PRC press-release as anything other than propoganda, China, it seems, has developed advanced AESA radars, LO coatings, active-cancellation, and have solved the problems they have building russian engine designs even when given support and assistance and a labour pool to boot.
 
You have no idea, Slowman, what a complete idiot you are, essentially you believe almost everything you are told so long as it confirms your schoolboy logic and endlessly tiresome nationalism, you should be utterly ashamed of your posting history on this site, many qualified experts have told you in PLAIN terms how utterly off the mark you actually are yet you have no humility whatsoever and continue to seek the attention of everyone here (and wasting their time) by positing every wayward PR release/propoganda/uncited/made up by you source as fact. 
 
I actually got bored of this entire forum because of people like you, it's such a shame how much your endless crap ruins what is otherwise an informed and interesting discussion, strategypage is absolutely STUPID to allow you to keep posting threads and I have seen several people lose interest in this board and stop posting (as I will shortly go back to doing). You are a disgrace and a nobody.

The PLAAF is 20+ years away from developing a plane that can evade western radar systems. End of.

F-35 cannot avoid AWACS detection.
There's detection and there's "detection".
 
The low frequency radars have have their positive and their negative characteristics. This determines what low frequency radars do well and what they don't do so good. If you take this source: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-frequency_radar"
 
Below 900 MHz the target radar cross section increases exponentially, however the increased radar cross section means that there is much more radar return from undesirable sources, such as cloud cover and rain.
 
However, low-frequency radar is limited by lack of available frequencies which are heavily used by other systems, lack of accuracy given the long wavelength, and by the radar's size, making it difficult to transport and making for an easy target. A long-wave radar may detect a target and roughly locate it, but not identify it, and the location information lacks sufficient weapon targeting accuracy
 
If you would have to design a stealth aircraft, you would have to take in account all the frequencies radars types can use. Then you would make a list of frequencies in decending order of importance of being stealthy at that frequency. Now considering what you read above should being stealthy at those low frequencies be at the top of that list?
 
As for the responses. None have considered what happens when you combine these low frequency systems with other radars, especially AESA radars that can focus in on an area. (The airforce are ???? for not having more EW aircraft)

For an aircraft that is supposed to be their future LO combatant, its missing the one significant common design element that all
LO platforms (manned and unmanned) have had in various guises since 1959.....
 
Might as well be that almost all stealth planes have a ridge/edge on their nose cones except the B1B.

PLAAF official is telling Chinese news media that the fighter that General He talked about on CCTV is Super-10(Modified J-10), and not J-XX.
 
Super-10 will have stealth and supercruise.
