Laser Brimstone has bee fired in anger for the first time. ht*p://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2009/10/30/334162/raf-hails-performance-of-tornado-gr4-in-afghanistan.html The RAF has detailed its first combat use of the newly upgraded weapon, which weighs roughly 50kg (110lb). A Tornado fired one of the missiles at a Taliban insurgent who was firing on coalition troops from a so-called "murder hole" carved within the wall of a compound. It scored a direct hit, destroying only a 1.5m (5ft) section of wall and without causing collateral damage to surrounding buildings. An RAF source describes the new weapon as "a massive success", adding: "It is incredibly accurate". The missile is also capable of striking moving ground targets, the source adds.

Taleban have guns. Farmers do not.

Thats patently untrue for afghanistan.  there is far higher gun ownership amongst the general population than anywhere else except the halcyon days of iraq.   AK47's etc are available in the markets for as low as $5 USD.

Afghanistan has higher gun ownership then Switzerland? I didn't think that was possible.

OK, so the farmers have guns, but would they be prepared to use them against the Taleban?

Teleban shoots a farmer; result is a dead farmer.
Farmer shoots a Taleban; result is a dead Taleban plus the farmer and his family and anyone who protests.

Remember, the Taleban are ruthless and control by fear.

As to Opium production, the crop mostly ends up in the hands of the Taleban for them to sell on for cash to support their war. The aim is the money. So if the supply was bought up by the alliance, the remaining source of opium money is in the hands of the farmers.

Beware the law of unintended consequences. Think things through!
