Aviation Week has an article on ongoing F-16 AESA radar upgrade contract bidding war between SABR and RACR, with Korea being the first market for the AESA upgrade bids as similar USAF program is delayed by two years.
Many are puzzled by why this article mentions Korea, since the current favorite of Korean contract is EL/M-2032, with Korean DoD trying to use SABR and RACR as leverages to pressure Elta to upgrade its bid to EL/M-2052 by accelerating tech transfer process. The reason for this is that Korean DoD's new common fighter avionics and flight simulators for F/A-50, KF-16, and KFX are designed to interface with Elta's 2032 and 2052 radars, and adding SABR/RACR support increases cost and delays project. |
