Subject: Dassault VP : Rafale's successor will join Eurofighter Consortium-like Euro Consortium.
SlowMan    10/19/2009 4:07:06 PM
New York Times article < link > "Dassault appears to be thinking along the same lines. Eric Trappier, executive vice president at Dassault Aviation, said that Rafale?s ?successor will probably be designed through a European cooperation, from 2025.? " So this is the end of all-French fighter aircraft.

at a nation specific level the travel and carriage of privileged material conditions for defence and foreign affairs (State Dept equiv) staff to go into France are "different" to Germany.

eg the restrictions for travel into France, Israel, and China are pretty similar

thats not meant to be a divisive comment, but reflects the reality of how the efficiency of a particular French espionage service (DGSE) was regarded

admittedly that was when I worked in a different area approx 8 years ago, but I don't believe that direction has changed.

at a basic level, any snr military or govt staff dealing with privileged material traveling overseas are briefed on the capabilities of the countries that they are entering - be they friend or foe..  they then get debriefed upon return.  friendlies like France and Israel have generated closer attention in the past.

as a clear personal example, when I was involved with a ballistics mgt project 10 years ago, (private sector), we were briefed about personal security (e-espionage issues) for UK, India, France, Singapore and Israel.  That was a long time ago and the circumstances were "different"  The same caveats and cautions did not apply to Canada, NZ, US, Germany,

again, 10 years ago.

I remember how briefings to American engineers attending the Paris Air Show back in the '90s included warnings that it was a certainty that French intel would search their rooms while they were out, and that any computers would be downloaded.  I'm sure that has not changed since then, either.

allot of gossip and anti-french retoric...what else is new on strategypage?? I had to laugh at the notion that the frenh would use time and money to spy on anything australian :)

however people here tend to forget that it was the french secret service who made an 'early' economic collapse of the sovjetic union possible...so maybe in retrospect, france can be regarded as the closest ally of the united states?

ever heard of the farewell dossier ...

nothings more gratifying than watching some respond who obviously has no concept about what and why people are briefed and debriefed when they go anywhere overseas. - in any country.

just to add to my prev and to reinforce that BF is a troll,

the above brief/debriefs occurred when I worked private in the hi-tech fluid dynamics/aero dynamics sector in germany and denmark.

but. don't let your own racist views pollute the discussion, its good for a giggle to waatch you struggle with basic concepts.

SARCASM on.

I've had it. So a French DGSE recruited Russian agent supplied document dump proof back in 1978 to France of what we knew that idiot, Kissinger, did when he opened the floodgates to happen when he pushed Detente. Its not like having known KGB and GRU operatives crowding trade delegations to Boeing and MacDonnell;was unknown to the Americans. Its not like their Russian ham-handed attempts to buy into Lockheed and/or order restricted tech aircraft from Boeing were also not a dead giveaway as to Russian intent.

SARCASM off.

This isn't fully relevant, but its kinda funny so here goes:

----
French Air Force in Afghanistan:
  • among others:
    • 3 Mirage F1 CR, since 20 May 2009. They relieved three Rafale that were present from 2007[24].
----
I was under the impression the Rafale was a good bomb truck so why didn't they relieve the 3 Rafales with others? Lack of spare parts? The Mirage is just better?

it's hard to say, but the Mirage F1 is probably the french airforce most used aircraft in foreign deployment, atleast in low-intesity conflicts. I thinks it's part of their light qrf together with the gazelles.

it's probably just because it's the cheapest option...
