Subject: JSF program report to Dutch Parliament : F-35 is a disaster, the total sales could be as low as 1875
SlowMan    10/6/2009 9:43:54 AM
A 136 page report to Dutch Parliament on the latest estimate of total F-35 sales as of September 2009. < link > In other word, it is time to bail out on F-35 since now the expected average unit cost of F-35 is $99 million.

Canada needs nukes about as much as they need a battleship.  If anyone launches on Canada, the US will probably fire back anyway.

I still think the CAF should think about the Super Hornet.  Their CF-18s are about 25 years old now, and probably hitting the end of their service lives (without an upgrade).  It may be another 10 years before Canada starts getting F-35s.  They may want to look an interim solution rather than depend entirely on the US.  I would suggest maybe a lease agreement on something--the Typhoon would be better than the Rafale or the Gripen, in this case.

They don't need to waste money on interim fighters like the SH. It makes no sense for Canada to waste Billions of dollars, when in less then a decade they are going to get the F-35's. Either go for the F-35, which Canada is already pored money into, or go for the SH. This interim crap is a waste of money for a country that has about a 00.1% chance of getting invaded in the next decade, and has a small defense budget. The Hornets can soldier on for another seven to 10 years.

The Russians are coming with pretentions for the Artic, as the americans are declaring the Canadians waters as "international". The French are reclaming the islands in Nova Scotia. I think Canada really needs nukes to keep their friends more "polite". Any way I don't think Obama will fire back any body, probably he will look for a conversation with a budweiser light.

The Russians in the Arctic I can see, but really--the US and Canada are going to go to war over fishing rights, or because France retains the right to St. Pierre and Miquelon?  And Canada's going to stop that by getting nuclear weapons and threatening to...what, nuke New York or Paris if the other countries don't back off?

Given that Canada has more chance of widespread secession than war with the US or France, I think that's a dumb idea.  Not that I have a problem with Canada getting nuclear weapons; I'm just asking why they want them.  If Russia launched on Canada, the US would likely shoot back, since we have no way of telling if over-the-pole ICBMs are heading for Seattle or Vancouver.
