Subject: Analyst: U.S. should slash its F-35 purchase plan

Well, they're at it again, an [un-named but probably liberal] DC think tank is "recommending" cutting F-35 purchases... They're doing what happened to so many weapons systems like the F-22, cutting quantity to "save money", thereby driving up unit cost, which in turn gives justification to further reduce quantity and [they hope] ending in canceling or pre-maturely ending a program/system altogether. link

> but I disagree very much that the F-35 wouldn't be suited for use against China.

Well, countries facing China as their primary adversary disagree. These countries don't want F-35; only F-22(Japan and Korea) or PAK-FA(India) are good enough to gain any meaningful air-combat advantage over China.

Either way, F-35 is a doomed project. Time to damage control and come up with an alternative.

Of course for those countries looking at their worst-case scenario of having to fight China 1-on-1 without help from allies like America, then a handful of F-35 aren't as capable as a handful of F-22 against the core of China's airpower, which is its several hundred reasonably modern 3rd and 4th Generation fighters.  But then, F-22 are *not* an option for them unless laws are changed and also unless the production line is extended soon, so that is MOOT and thus We Don't Care.  Their only options are F-35 or F-15SE or some other country's fighters, period.

However, for America--which is what both Ehrhard and Senty were referring to--F-35 are far more than capable-enough systems for us to use to accomplish all our mission requirements against China's IADS if we choose to do so, as our hundreds of stealth fighters (F-22 and F-35) will combine as a team with all our other assets that we will bring to such a major contingency, and the stealth and other advantages of both the F-22 and F-35 will be overpowering.
