Subject: The Telegraph : UK MoD switching from F-35B to F-35C, will redesign carriers to make the switch
SlowMan    8/6/2009 11:06:02 AM
< link > "In a significant about turn the MoD has indicated that it will ditch the jump-jet version of Joint Strike Fighter in favour of the conventional model, as the planes for its two new aircraft carriers. The Daily Telegraph has learnt from senior defence officials that an announcement will be made this autumn." "The about-turn will also mean that the first of two 65,000 tonne carriers under construction, HMS Queen Elizabeth, will have to be redesigned with cost penalties. It is possible the recent £1 billion rise to £5 billion for the carriers might by partly attributable to the change of plan. But senior MoD sources believe that choosing the "CV" variant over the "B" will give the Navy considerable advantages as the conventional fighter can fly further and carry a far bigger bomb payload. Both variants are built by Lockheed Martin."

About the EMALS

I don't know EMALS design on details but it should not be that challenging, Electromagnetic ramp technology have been in use in for a quite long time in many industrial domain.

Technically, Electricity is much more efficient then hydraulic/steam to transfer power. Unless EMALS have a terrible design, it should require less energy to lunch a equivalent weight then traditional steam catapult.

For me, steam catapult are completely outdated. Its a bit like having a diesel powered locomotive that would use steam to transfer energy to the wheel.

From what I understand, the problem with EMALS isn't that it won't work, but that it works too well.  It uses so much force that it could tear an aircraft apart when launched.

Steam cats work, and that's really all you need!  Granted, they are overdue for replacement, but hey, if it works...

Is it really a problem? From what i know electric force can be adjusted on the nanosecond level.  EMALS could have a smooth acceleration curve. I am sure it would be less stressful for the airframe then steam powered catapult curently are.

Second carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, may be sold to India. India confirms they are interested and are talking. < link >

Just a  couple of weeks ago they confirmed they would both be built for the RN. Nothing has changed.

The article is from UK Guardian. Of course, that's not credible enough for you. Nothing is.

The article is dated Sunday, November 15th. In other word, yesterday.

You must be the only one on the planet then that doesn't know that the Guardian is anti-US, anti-military and basically has been caught out before for hysterical inaccurate reporting but doesn't give a fig.  The only paper thats worse in accurate reporting is the Times of India when it reports on the success of Indian procurement in missile, tank and maritime  programs
The Guardian would have to be robert fisks alternative home....
but of course you knew all about the guardian and accurate journalism....
/sarcasm off

If this is perhaps garbage, maybe they are considering buying a third POW for themselves? Would cut costs for ourselves, and give the Indians a great carrier.

I watched Prime Minister's Questions (best program on C-SPAN, BTW), and a question came up about the carriers.  Brown said that both (he emphasized the word) would be built in British dockyards.  Then again, that's politics.

I'm not discounting the Guardian article entirely, since the MoD has been known to do incredibly boneheaded things in the past.
