Subject: first export sale for Rafale
FCUS    6/19/2009 4:50:01 AM
The Rafale is going to be the UAE AF new plane. The UAE government just sent the "technical and operationnal specifications" to the french gov. The UAE wish to acquire 60 Rafale of a more modern version than the one used in France, with for example more powerful engines and radar. This new version, which we will call tranche 4 (Rafale F4), could one day also be in service in the French AF. This is good news for Dassault. With one export order, the Rafale is more likely to be chosen in Switzerland and Brazil where he was the favourite.

The Rafale is not the best fighter they can afford, becuase it costs the most, from its competitors, and is not the best all around bird from the bunch.

Ok, I don't want to get into an argument about which bird is the best because it has been done to death, so I'll amend my statement to say that I think the UAE is smart to take the opportunity to improve its aircraft fleet.

There is almost no chance of this happining, and even if it does and the US supports the S. Arabians, then UAE has no chance, with or without the Rafales.

I wonder if the US government thought that there was a real chance of the Shah being toppled in Iran when they were selling them F-14's in the 70's? Disputes can emerge quickly, especially between non-democratic countries, but it takes years to integrate a major new military capability. As such countries should be buying gear that is as close to the regional standard as they can afford.

As for whether or not they would have a chance against the Saudis with US support, I agree that this would the case if the US provided a direct military contribution. However, I was more thinking along the lines of the US just denying them support for their US equipment. In that circumstance I think that the UAE would have a chance if they took a leaf out of the Israeli book of how to defeat much larger enemies quickly with pre-emptive action. Improving their airforce with Rafales would assist in that regard.

So you think this is all about trading in the Mirages for the Rafales, and has nothing to do with politics?

I think for the UAE they have a clear opportunity to capitalise on a good deal to improve their airforce and that they would be silly not to seriously consider it. For France it provides the opportunity to get that elusive first export customer for the Rafale. If it strengthens an important political relationship at the same time then that is a bonus.

Sounds like UAE also gets a few reactors to help with a nuclear program in response to Iran.

And that is exactly why Israel cannot and is not going to allow Iran to go nuclear. Be it for energy or weapons. UAE will just be the first. All the rest will follow and Israel knows it and they also know THAT would surely be the end of the nation of Israel.

So Israel gets to decide who can have access to civilian nuclear energy production ? (emphasis on civilian). That's a little arrogant on their part.

Well I don't think that is what I said. Iran is not just anyone and surely you are not trying to tell me Iran is doing this for *civilian* energy purposes? Funny, even Irans Arab neighbors don't buy that for even a minute. And yea, I guess that is awful arrogant of that damn Israel to be putting their very survival ahead of Irans wishes huh? How dare they!!
Israel knows full well if Iran obtains nukes, which is exactly what they are up to and every reasonable nation knows it, it will create a nuclear arms race in the mid east. Just like eluded to already with UAE possibly getting some nuke reactors for *civilain* purposes from France already? What happens is if Israel allows it they wake up one day and find themselves surrounded by 400 million nuclear armed Arabs and Persians who hate their guts. Israel knows that and ain't gonna let it happen IMHO. And they got every right to stop it.
